Been a LONG time since I visited here. Not even sure I can catch up on all that's happened... so .. Highlights ( Read more... )

Golden Compass: World was okay, I was not impressed by the story or the blatant preaching by the author, and I thought both got worse in the second story so I didn't read the third.

really, I wasn't bothered by the "blatant preaching" as I didn't really see it as much as you apparently did. There's definitely religious themes there, but IMO, they are redeemed in the third book.

I generally dislike Christian-themed books, but these are so central to Lyra's upbringing and the theological science of her world. I thought that with the introduction of the other worlds and characters it was sort of evened out a bit.

YMMV.

Pullman is very very anti-Christian.

Hrm. Anti-Christian, or anti-church?

The way I was reading it was that the basic precepts are good, but those in power (all different kinds of power: secular, religious, scientific, angelic, etc) had gone Too Far and lost sight of truth.

I just finished reading the whole trilogy about 3 weeks ago.

I read them when they came out, and I remember adoring The Golden Compass, and not so much the rest, but this time I really got into them and was swept away.

There's a lot of subtext going on that I totally missed the first go-round. The second and third books add a ton of layers of plot, as well.

Things can turn around in 24 hours, that's for sure. Stuff's better, and I *may* be able to make it this weekend. Still up in the air, but it at least looks hopeful today. :)

I just started the third book. I found them less imaginative and more preachy as they go, and while I did not find them apecifically anti-christian, they are most definitey anti-organized religion. Still, I found the story compelling enough to keep reading.
