Suppose I said that I only knew I was unarmed, and if I distracted our bad guy then the barista had a better chance to get out?

Supposing that, I would inquire as to why you felt he would actually use the weapon, and why you viewed giving her a chance to leave an escalated situation was better than not escalating the situation to begin with.
