Jack Krugman died today. He's probably best known as Oscar, the slob in "The Odd Couple," but I remember him as "Quincey, M. ...but I still manage to waste time online. Mad Magazine was a major influence on my understanding of life when I was growing up. But since Marvel bought it, I've found more wisdom in the online pages of Cracked, which I remember as Mad's hapless wannabe forty years ago. Alarm Will Sound's cover of "4" by Aphex Twin
I discovered this song in 2005, back when Salon had a daily mp3 available for free download. Alarm Will Sound is a group of classical musicians. They recorded an album, "Acoustica," of covers of electronic music performed by Aphex Twin that had been transcribed for classical instruments. 1997 was the first Thanksgiving weekend I spent reading fanfic. I had just discovered The X-Files fandom. I didn't have a tv, but I'd discovered a 24-hour computer lab at the University of Washington that was several blocks from the main campus, stocked with Unix-based dumb terminals. Interview with political statistician Nate Silver
Nate Silver: it's the numbers, stupid in the Guardian UK. Made me think of Charlie Eppes. He says he got hooked on statistics when he was six, when the Detroit Tigers won the World Series, and that being a math geek has made him more of an outsider than being gay has.
