From here.Laini is conversing quietly with River, while Puck eyes the symbols on the portal, reaching out towards the wood. Duo, leaning against one of the totem poles, didn't seem to be paying any attention, until he slaps Puck's hand away without opening his eyes

Sometimes, it is important to step back and put things in their proper perspective.

For instance: Stepping back from Puck, River, and Duo, one sees three humanoids out for a jaunty stroll by the water. One also sees, by virtue of one's enviable vantage point, a gaggle of greasy, unsightly, and generally motley pirates. This motley crew (slightly less humanoid than our three jaunters), advances greasily upon them, though our protagonists do not seem to take notice. Quite possibly, their apparent lack of caution may be blamed on the many claims on their attention: the hustle and bustle of the pier, the necessity of discovering exactly where they've landed this time, etc., etc.

Putting things in perspective, it is easy to see the pirates reach out and snatch what appears to be, for all intents and purposes, a pretty lady with a black dress and a long brown braid.

It is slightly less easy, due to the distance, to hear the indignant squawk of, "HEY! What the--"

But the general gist is, nonetheless, understood.
