a matter of perspective...

Here is a question that has been bugging me for a while: Let's say you have one character you favor. A character you feel sexually attracted to above all others. (of Michael for the Michael/Wentfans, Lincoln for the Lincoln Lovers, Mahone for the Mahonis... etc ( Read more... )

This is an intriguing question. I'll respond as a Linc fan.

I suppose it depends on the writer. Someone who gets into Linc's head really well and portrays him as I see him, well, there's not anything much better than that from my perspective.

Unless you have Michael thinking about Linc. (Non-romantic for me, I'm not a slasher.) If someone gets into Mike's head really well and portrays the love that Michael feels for Linc and the whys and the wherefores are filled in, that's equally satisfying to read.

As for from a romantic or sexual perspective, I do enjoy Veronica's POV, or a great Jane fic showing her desire for and understanding of Linc. I am also a Linc/Sara shipper, so I've read some great pieces where Sara compares the brothers in her head and that's really enjoyable too.

I suppose if I HAD to choose one, I'd rather have the first, someone who is in Linc's head and makes me feel like yep, that's exactly what Linc thinks/feels/would do/say etc.

So maybe it depends on the type of fic? Like in regular fic his POV is more interesting, in sexual/romantic fic it's more interesting to read about other characters commenting on him/loving him rather than vice versa?

Yeah, that's a good way to look at it, especially as I don't see Linc being super emotive in those situations anyway. Not knowing how he feels makes it more suspenseful, plus as a woman I can see what a woman would find attractive about him even though I also recognize his probability of being hard to love.

I often try writing something from one person's perspective only, but I always end up writing both sides anyway. But if I could write from the view of just one person, then I would probably write from his partner's perspective. You see, T-Bag is my character, and I feel I don't write him canon enough to try and get inside his head.

Yeah, I think it is normally considered "cleaner" somehow to have only one POV is a chapter, but I can totally see why it would be way too tempting/necessary to switch because, dammit, both opinions are important.

I feel I don't write him canon enough to try and get inside his head.

Very interesting. Do you think that that is because T-Bag is particularly hard to write or because he your fave character you are more worried about getting him wrong and hence there is a greater hesitation when it comes to writing him?

A mixture of both, no doubt. Not only is he so different from any other character I can imagine, but also if I wrote a serious fic and screwed him up? I'd hate on myself :P

If its all about the characters mind, heart and soul I want to read or write it from my most beloved characters POV.

When it goes to the body, gets physical or even flat out PWP I want to see it from the partners POV.

Do keep in mind my tendency to write only first person likely warps my ways and wants compared to most people.

As a T-Bag & Abruzzi worshipper, I always favoured, and will always favour, the first variant. At least my Abruzzi-centered fics are mostly on first person, revolving around his own feelings and thoughts; as for the Teddy fics, I haven't written so many so far, but I'd certainly try the same approach.

I don't think there is an actual reason for doing so; perhaps I just feel closer to the character, if I actually become him while writing.

Interesting. Do you write mostly Gen or do you write romance/smut too?

Well, I write for many fandoms. But I'll answer this only PB-related, of course.

Taking my few fics into consideration - well, the number I have written so far, as I'm not puting a stop to it now! - they can all be found at my journal, for any possible reference, I've been mostly focusing on Gen, as Angst/Drama are my favourite working fields. But I always have some Romance excerpts within, to some extent. For example, there is this Abruzzi-centered fic, happening before the series, which is quite Romance filled, and there's my famous - and infamous! - Teddy multi-chaptered fic, which will end up by being a psychedelic and possibly psychotic T-Bag/Veronica fic, if I'll ever have the time and courage to finish it :).

Neatness. I have read only two or three T-Bag/Veronica fics and both of them very good and very strange.

Any chance you might be interested in pbfic_exchange2? Last day of signups is today :)

(I'm always trying to talk people who write some more un-ordinary fic into joining; of course, if you would feel weird about maybe getting stuck writing something more ordinary then maybe it wouldn't be a good fit :); but give it some thought; I actually think that one of those T-Bag/Veronica fics were written for one of the earlier exchanges :D)
