"Felix Felicis" - Finished

Introduction

This is my entry for hp_art_project , where I was assigned Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 22 "After the Burial." In this chapter, Harry takes the felix felicis potion (aka "luck in a bottle") which will enable him to do things in a highly favorable way (such as compelling him to do something that will lead ( Read more... )

Wow, dear...I think this time you've outdone yourself. This is a fantastic piece. I love the colours and the balance of light and shadow...it has a great atmosphere.

I think you are right about the glasses, but I still love the final painting more, because it's so much more Harry...these glasses are essential to him. :)

If I was a HP fan as much as I am an XF fan, I'd definitely order a print!

Kudos!

I honestly believe this is so, far, my best work, ever. I'm so frustrated with myself now because I couldn't match this quality of work for the painting I'm working on now. This one is dramatic, and it satisfies me. My other two works that I haven't "shown" yet here...not so much.

I really hate painting glasses, even though I wear glasses myself. Glasses really put distance between the eyes and the viewer...and it blocks him somehow. But yeah, it wouldn't be Harry without the glasses. I'm contemplating painting that scene of Harry at King's Cross...he's described as NOT wearing glasses! Hee! No glasses!

If I was a HP fan as much as I am an XF fan, I'd definitely order a print! You know, I've promised myself, one of these days, I WILL paint an XF painting. But in my mind, it's not as satisfying, you know? Because HP is based on characters in a book...and therefore there's more ( ... )

There will always be works you are more satisfied with than others. I think that's only natural. Of course that leaves a feeling of dissatisfaction in perfectionist characters like us, but I guess we'll just have to accept that not everything can be as perfect as we want to. :p Be happy about what you've achieved here!

I think you've done the glasses extremely well. I remember talking to you about drawing glasses before, and how they looked wrong in one drawing...so you've definitely improved, because these look just perfect, and while they take away from Harry's emotions, they add a lot to his character. You know what I mean?

But isn't that a paradox? Shouldn't be a more challenging piece be also more interesting? Especially for you? ;)

Oh I'll be happy for a little bit, and then I'll get frustrated when I can't duplicate the quality. And then I'll get dissatisfied with a painting I *was* satisfied with because my skill level will increase and make it look like crap maybe 2-3 years down the road. That's happened to a previous painting I thought was brilliant...and then now when I look at it...it just seems so stupid to have EVER thought it was brilliant.

Yeah.

That's kind of the story of my life.

I guess it motivates me to do better each and every time. The threshold keeps increasing. I'm happy that I still have stuff to improve on.

It's an excellent, atmospheric and intense rendering of Harry, well done! And I'm not even a real HP fan, in way, but this tells me more about Harry than most of the books.

Personally, I like what happens when you painted the glasses on. Yes, the glasses are a sort of obstacle between us and him and between him and the focus of his eyes but I think that they do function as framing the eyes, too and thus focus our sight on his eyes.
That is, I like it :)

Well done you, as always!!! :)

You're not a real HP fan. Shame on you! :D

I think Harry is very misunderstood. So many people get frustrated with Harry, but...I can't help but try to put myself in his shoes (I scored very high on the empathy scale in this category), and try to imagine the immense pressure and expectation he is trying to operate under while also being a very young and inexperienced and new to this whole world.

But still, I didn't like that the delicacy of his eyelids are somewhat obscured. If his head was tilted and not straight on, his eyes would be even more obscured by the glasses, and that frustrates me ( ... )

Thanks so much :D I spent most of those two weeks just sitting and staring at it, it seems. I do a lot of that. That's what I'm doing right now with my sshg_exchange painting...I'm just sitting and staring at it. Ugh, SUCH a waste of time, but it also helps me decide if I need to make any major changes or no.
