It is 22 days until I fly off into the Wide Blue Yonder (aka Manchester, England, United Kingdom, Continent of Europe, The Northern Hemisphere) and my departure preparations are progressing. So, I have a few questions that my f-list might be able to help me with...

The Lonely Planet guides were the best guides that I found when I was doing the moving overseas thang, and for added amusement value, check out the one on Australia if you get a chance :-)

I can't help with suggesting things to do, but I'd love to get periodic updates, in some form, of what you enjoy seeing so I can add them to my list for when I finally make it over there!

Other advice : organise your prescription medication to take with you if you can, otherwise check what you need to do about it. I found that my asthma medication was about 10 times the price in Amsterdam and quite difficult to get. Depending what you may be on, it can be worth checking its availability and price before you go so you can get it sorted out in alternative ways if necessary. Take at least one full extra Ventolin (or equivalent) in your luggage, being without that one is bad!

Yup, I am definitely planning to stock up on Ventolin before I leave! Also contact lenses, Sudafed etc.

I'll still be posting to LJ from over there, so expect to hear about my travels and mundane everyday life here. :D

Send me an email (to gjlipman at yahoo dot com) and I'll send you a reply with advice on England.

talk with Tiff! :-)

Not sure if he's still there, but Anthony Botham (asb@cs.mu.oz.au) would also be a good person to talk with. When Leanne and I caught up with him in London in 1998/9 new year one of the things he mentioned as a "gotcha" for Australians moving to the UK was the difficulty of opening a bank account.

I haven't lived in the UK so can't give advice myself. My experiences from visiting are that everything is expensive. It's cold. And it always seems to be raining in London. Useful stuff, I know.

I've got a Rough Guide to Britain, and then a Lonely planet to London. To be honest, I don't really use either of them that much - I prefer just to wonder and learn things myself ( ... )

I went to Dreamspace last Sunday, with Chris Loader - we were just walking past, and wondered what it was. It is just next door to my office, but yes, was pretty impressive.

Yeah - accept your point about the housing estates - it is probably also a bit safer being a bloke, especially a bit tough one like me ;-) What I more meant was that I originally stayed in Deptford, and we had to walk past council houses to get there, and it took a bit of time to get used to the fact that they weren't going to kill me.

I haven't been to the UK recently, but I'll come up with some general answers ( ... )
