Thanks to pezzae for linking to this article:

Our bananas are in terrible danger!Much as I appreciate the seriousness of this in terms of the fact that the economies of countries reliant on bananas as their main product are likely to be devastated and that it is merely one instance of an endemic problem with global mass agricultural practices; and much ( Read more... )

But srsly. What's wrong with a banana split with fish genes? (Ooooh-er, it contains DNA! I don't wanna eat anything with DNA in it!) That's like saying banana and piranha contain some of the same letters, that means that bananas are fish. (Wait a minute. Maybe Terry Pratchett was onto something there...) And they even sound the same! Ohnoes! Except that you eat one** and the other eats you. Try not to get them mixed up, people.

THANKYOU! You have said this in a much clearer and definitely funnier way than I have ever managed :)

Heheh :) thanks! It's an argument that persistently gets on my nerves when it comes to GM food... I think I've finally found a way to explain why!

I hate banana too! I hate how they get put in smoothies. I hate the way I can tell there is 1% banana in some tropical juices. I look forward to a happy time in which a grandchild will point at a banana-shaped fridge magnet and say "what is that?" and I will say "well once we had fruit that looked like that but then they all disappeared" (the kid will think I am full of crap but it will still be satisfying).

Just a hint: you'll need to make some children so that you can have grandchildren to tell that to...

to be fair, he didn't actually specify that it would be his grandchild to whom he was speaking.

That is strictly true, but the implication is that it is one of his grandchildren...

Yay for another banana defender! I thought there were too many banana haters in this thread, and was surprised you were the only one to come to their defense. I too used to hate them, until, like you, I realised I was eating them too ripe. I made this discovery last year at the height of my depression-fueled 'I'm not going to eat a damn thing except crumpets once in a while' appetite loss. I suddenly started craving the things, and no wonder. They fill you up a little without feeling bloated, and they contain all sorts of goodies. Perfect sick person's food.

I wrote a long-winding post on my re-discovery of bananas, and some comments describe evolution and trade in terms of bananas.

I'll defend the bananas too! I adore them - but to eat fresh only when their skins are bright yellow. When they start getting darker and spotty they get cooked up or smoothied.

Yum yum yum yum yum yum yum....

I guess there are some strange people out there that love coriander leaves and parsnip. Yelch.

My problem with the bananas you describe is that I'm a veggo so I don't care for fish with my banana split.

I have heard some scientifically based arguments about the dangers of GM foods, but I'm darned if I can remember or find them now. Unfortunately most of the anti-GM sites I found were fairly flaky, which surprised me as the anti-GM movement is reasonably strong. The Greenpeace site was the best I could find with a quick search ( ... )

Hmm, I don't think the blanket "no animal genes in my food cos I'm a vego" statement is entirely sound -- not that I'm denying your right to object to GM food or to choose what you will and won't eat, but phrased in that way it doesn't make sense to me. Bananas share about 50% of their genes with humans without any GM taking place, but that doesn't make banana-eaters cannibals ( ... )

Ahh, I thought that 'no animal genes because I'm a veggo' implied the arguments you gave:) I'll remember to better qualify my arguments.
