I would much rather have seen the Ripley movie, myself. mostly for the reassurance that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are perfectly capable of making a good, successful, entertaining picture as seperate entities. Not that their version of Sweeney Todd wouldn't be good. I'm sure it will be. I just personally never found the story to be that weird.
People pies, psychotic barbers and the lusty ladies who love them, miracle elixir salesmen and mental asylum breakouts? Totally conventional. Absolutely. With you 100% there.
Sorry, by wierd I mean....well, let me repharse that. Tim Burton movies are always very much other wordly, even if they're supposed to be Earth-bound, they always strike me as being from another planet, or dimension....not at all in line with our reality. Sweeeny Todd, though, always came across as extremely unique, but I can picture it happening in almost any town I have ever been in.
I don't know if that makes more sense outside of my mind, but there ya go.
