Hello LJ friends...
I haven't written in a long time...
and now I write to ask for help...HELP--please?

The problem:
I have a very nice Compaq Presario that's just a couple of years old.
It has never given me a bit of trouble.
I never ask it to do anything particularly difficult.
Last night, I pushed the power button to turn it on, and nothing happened.

Let's start with the basics - do you know for sure that the computer is receiving power? Simple test is to unplug the computer and plug in something like a lamp into the same socket. If no power, then fix that ( ... )

Thank you very, very much.
Your numbered explanation is calming, even though the word kablooie might be quite appropriate. I shall be hopeful until I have reason not to be.

I can make a house call, if you need help with your hardware.

THere are many causes for hardware to malfuction and the motherboard not to boot up. After checking that everything is ok with the power, the next step is to open up the case, clean the dust off the motherboard and all the cards, remove all the components, including the memory and starting up the motherboard to see if it's ok. If the motherboard doesn't boot up then, the motherboard could have some static that doesn't allow it to boot up, which is common after resetting power.
Remove the motherboard, plug it back in the case, test... Make sure that the motherboard is properly insulated. If the motherboard boots up, plug in all the other cards, test them individually, put the computer back together. All done.

Hi Cutie,
It's been a long time since I've talked with you!
Thanks for jumping in to help me.
I'm at work right now, so I don't really have the mental capacity to make decisions, but I very well might call on you for more help soon (as in, tomorrow).
Thanks also for the reference.
Nice to see you,
FP
