Computer Advice

Hello LJ friends...
I haven't written in a long time...
and now I write to ask for help...HELP--please?

The problem:
I have a very nice Compaq Presario that's just a couple of years old.
It has never given me a bit of trouble.
I never ask it to do anything particularly difficult.
Last night, I pushed the power button to turn it on, and nothing happened.

More details:
I have unplugged it and unhooked all of its accessories, waited for a while, plugged it back in, pushed power and...nothing.
I took off the side panel and looked at all the wires and hardware and realized I don't know what I'm looking at.

Potential contributor to the problem:
I had to reset the electrical circuit for my room once this past week. The computer was actually plugged into an outlet-strip that has a surge protector, and the outlet-strip was not tripped during the circuit reset. But now I'm afraid I melted my computer...

Priorities:
Get data off the main drive.
Save the computer for general use.

Question:
What do I do now? Whom do I ask for help? Where do I take it for servicing? Does anyone out there know about power switches and circuitry?
