A number of films with prominent young actress roles have premiered recently at the 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Not all of those young actresses have been able to attend the festival (
Saoirse Ronan's
Lost River is showing, but due to filming schedules, she's stuck on the set of
Brooklyn, a '50s drama about a small-town Irish girl who moves to New York). But here are a few of the starlets who were actually in Cannes to attend their premieres in person.
Here are the darling young stars of Le Meraviglie, at a photocall with their movie mom (Monica Bellucci) and foster brother (Luis Huilca). The coming-of-age Italian film (its English title is The Wonders) has been one of the best-received at the festival. Maria Alexandra Lungu (on Monica's right) stars as the oldest of four daughters of a family of beekeepers who take in a foster child (Luis), who becomes for catalyst for change for the entire family. Eva Morrow, Maria-Stella Morrow, and Agnese Graziani play the three younger sisters -- don't you love their little matching flats?
But of course, not all films have fared as well as Le Meraviglie. Child-abduction drama The Captive, about parents (Ryan Reynolds & Mireille Enos) searching for their kidnapped daughter, has gotten bad reviews from just about everyone. Peyton Kennedy, who plays the abducted girl, wore an adorable yellow dress to the premiere in Cannes, where director Atom Egoyan kept a protective arm around her.
Here Kristen Stewart and Chloe Moretz sandwich their costar Juliette Binoche (Chocolat) at the premiere for their movie
Clouds of Sils Maria, one of the most buzzed-about debuts of the festival. Juliette stars as an older actress who feels threatened when a rising starlet (Chloe) reprises the role that first made her famous; Kristen plays Juliette's loyal assistant.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 isn't having its premiere at the festival (it's still set for release in November), but there was a photocall and party to promote the film. Jennifer Lawrence was at both events, attending the photocall in a screen-print shirt showing a person walking up a flight of stairs on a beach.
The Cannes Film Festival's Chopard Trophy is awarded to the best young actor and actress of the year. (Previous winners include Audrey Tautou and
Shailene Woodley.) This year, Cate Blanchett presented the award to Logan Lerman (
The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and 20-year-old French actress Adele Exarchopoulos, who also took home the Best Young Actor/Actress Awards at this year's
Critics Choice Awards.
