Something Eternal

He sneaked in as quietly as he could.

He took of his shoes, stripped slowly down to his underwear avoiding a ludicrous tripping over his own pants and like a sneaky thief he pushed the covers aside, got in and covered himself with the covers again, holding his breath.

“What time is it?” he heard Sandra’s voice ask him.

“It’s way past your bedtime, missy” he tried to joke.

“Funny” she murmured turning over to face him “What was it this time? Why the double shift?”

“Well, you know how it is.
Donny had somewhere to be so they asked me to fill in for him” he explained with a sigh.

Sandra frowned for a moment, then exhaled.

“They are putting too much on you, Noah. I’ve told you before, there’s no use in having more money if you are not around to spend them with me”.

She put her arm under his head and pulled him closer.

Noah approached her placing his head in the nest of her bosom, inhaling her perfume that meant home and stability and safety.

“I don t want you to miss out on anything because you are married to me, darling” he whispered, his voice muffled against her bare skin.

Noah literally sensed her flinch.

“What did you say? You did NOT say this to me!”
He opened his mouth to say something. Save something but in vain as she stopped him.

“Being married to you, I have all that I need. Your love, your devotion.” She emphasized.

“We are good, decent people Noah and I know that one day we will have the big family that we dream of”

“One day? He asked hopefully.
“How soon is that day?” he pressed.

“No one knows and no one can know” she stated matter-of-factly. But that wasn’t how she felt. Inside she was on the verge of crying.

“We have to make sure we can take care of a child first” she spoke softly.

“What do you mean, Sandra?” he asked her. He lifted up his eyes to meet hers.

He had a vague idea of what she meant.

He held her eyes with his for a moment and then looked away, letting the reality of what she meant sink in.

“You CAN take care of a child Sandra” he said.

She shook her head, tears brimming in her eyes. “How can you be so sure when I can’t even seem to bear you one?”

“That’s ok honey” he cut in. “We’ve only been married for two years, it’s not like we have been trying for ages”.

She kept shaking her head, pursing her lips together not as much to make a point as in an attempt to keep hurtful words inside.

She didn’t want to be so bitter, so pessimistic, and so negative or feel so guilty but in a way it was inevitable.

She knew Noah didn’t blame her, but with only him working, leaving every morning and leaving her behind, she felt obliged to do something.

Something more.
Something right for him to show him that she loved him deeply and that she appreciated everything he did for the both of them.

Looking into his eyes in this moment, it felt like he already knew that but she didn’t dare hold such dear hope.

So she kept silent.

They had been together for years.
High school sweethearts.
They knew each other too well, felt too damn close for Noah to let this just be.

Silently, he slid up and took her in his arms instead.

“Shhh” he said. “It’s ok. I know we will have a child of our own. And it will be like you! She will have your hair and your eyes.” He whispered as he leaned to kiss her forehead.

“How do you know?” she pressed, pouting still.
“Because I love you and you will me and God will send us a child. I have no doubt and neither should you!”

He sensed her sigh.

“Ok” she conceded.
“If it is a girl, she will have my hair and my eyes… Blonde, blue eyes.. Doesn’t sound so bad. She will be vibrant and bright….”

He gave a quick laugh. “We should name her Claire, the bright one” he exclaimed in a sudden epiphany.

Sandra smiled.
“Claire? Hmmm , it sounds fitting. But we have only talked about her looks. What about her brain? Maybe she should be as smart as you! After all, she should have something of you too!” she said winking at him.

“My brains?” he mused.
“Maybe! If she is lucky”

“But come to think of it, she can’t be both pretty and smart. I mean come on… Leave something for the other child as well!”

She felt so happy she could scream out in joy.

She knew it was only make-believe but his certainty was starting to rub off on her.

“There will be a second child?” she asked.

“Sure! I have to have a son too right? What will he look like?” he went on.

She paused to think for a moment.
“Heeeh, curly hair and kind eyes? Just like a boy for his whole life. And his name would be…”

“Lyle!” he finished her thought.

“Lovett?”

“Eeewww, no! I just love that name, it reminds me of “love””

Sandra kicked him under the blanket. “Not Lyle! Come on!!!!”

“Why not? It’s a great name!!! Lyle Bennett… it is an awesome name! He could star in show business”

“Oh yeah?” Sandra teased him.

“Oh yeah!” he stated with a nod. “And Claire Bennett! That’s great too. She sounds as if she will find the cure to cancer or something.” he said with pride.

“She can’t be too smart remember?” Sandra teased him again sticking out her tongue.

He sighed. “Oh yeah… me and my stupid rules… Maybe we should name her Marie instead and call her Curie as a nickname…Maybe she should be ugly?”

“Nah, too obvious! Imagine how hard she is going to be mocked at in school! You don’t want that for our poor girl, do you?”

“Who said anything about being poor? “ he laughed.
“That’s why I have been working my ass off”

“Oh right!” his wife said and gave a laugh too and it was the best she had had in years.

“Don’t make fun of me!”he said pinching her.

She turned over to avoid his hand but stopped midway bursting out in laughter, as he pulled her close to him.

“Let’s make a Claire or a Lyle, shall we?” he said kissing her.
