Isabella left the church gratefully after Easter Mass; she felt like she'd done nothing but go to church the past week. She hid a yawn behind her hand; the Vigil service had extended long into the night, and they'd returned home only to come straight back to Church the next morning. At least Mass allowed for the prospect of socializing afterward.
As the square began to fill, she caught sight of Lady Catherine. Their last meeting hadn't exactly been pleasant, but Marian and Robin had asked her to speak to Lady Catherine, and Isabella was more than up to the challenge. If nothing else, she was a welcome change from most of the other nobles, who were boring and cowed.
Lady Catherine turned and seemed to catch sight of her. Isabella unwrapped her arm from her husband's and took her leave, then made her way through the clumps of people chatting. "Lady Catherine!" she said, arranging a mostly friendly smile on her face. "It has been quite awhile since I've last seen you."
"Lady Isabella, I thought that that was you." Isabella seemed in better spirits than the last time that they'd met. Back then they had spent the better part of the afternoon verbally sparring with each other in front of a jewellery stall. "Indeed it has! I have been preoccupied." Her brother had been dragging her along with him to a lot of boring business meetings, but she had behaved so badly during the last one that Geoffrey had decided to leave her behind in Nottingham this time.
Catherine caught sight of the man that Isabella had left on his own just to come speak to her. He had folded his arms and had a scowl on his face which made him look like a petulant child. "Is that the infamous brother?"
Isabella turned to follow Catherine's gaze. Why did he always have to stare? It made her skin crawl. "You mean Guy? No, that is my husband. He came to join me in town since last we spoke. To tell the truth," she said, lowering her voice, "I would not mind being spared of his company a few moments if you would care to take a turn around the churchyard with me."
"Your husband?" Catherine looked at the man again, a bit better this time. He didn't look at her, he only had eyes for Isabella. It was painfully obvious from Isabella's body language that she felt no love for the man and did not appreciate his attentions.
"I would love to." She grabbed Isabella's arm and waved at her husband. "Excuse me! Sir!" He fixed his blue eyes on her, noticing her for the very first time. "I'm going to borrow your lovely wife for a while. We need to talk. Girl talk. I will return her to you when we're done." Before he had a chance to object, Catherine had already dragged Isabella along with her.
The tone of Catherine's voice had changed. She looked pale, Isabella realized suddenly. She's probably never had to worry about anything more serious than a tear in her gown, a little voice said, ungenerously. "Why don't we continue this at my house? It's just down the block," she said, nodding towards the street beyond the churchyard. "Or at least let me offer you some warm wine. You don't look well, and I feel like it's my fault for suggesting all sorts of wild things."
((feel free to mod them going, or telling Thornton or whatever))
Christ. What the hell had come over her? Catherine was usually so level-headed and now at the merest hint of her beloved cousin being involved in something that could have very severe consequences, she suddenly felt very nauseous. "I'll be fine. Really. But I could definitely use a drink."
Catherine had dragged Isabella away from her husband before, but this time Isabella took the lead and led her away from the church as the two women headed to the Thornton residence for some wine and more conversation.
sorry for the wait, I was really struggling with how to end my reply
