Evolutionary psychology and a minor point about porn

Jul 23, 2008 14:13

I can understand why I should be pleasurably stimulated by pictures of attractive persons in positions of immediate sexual availability. In the gazillion-year history of my 'Y' chromosome, the sight of a healthy, aroused breeding-partner has usually presaged an imminent opportunity to mingle my genes with some high-quality genetic totty. It's no ( Read more... )

In the animal kingdom, seeing two others get it on means:

1) the female is in estrus
2) the male isn't going to be able to go again for a while (refractory period)
3) after the male dismounts, it might easily be your turn
4) teaching new techniques (such as 'teaching a young male how to pass genes on' and 'teaching a female how to stand and hold herself while the male is passing his genes on')

If young animals are expected to learn to hunt and eat and drink, why should they be expected to "let nature take its course" when it comes to fucking?

Heh, usually when I watch hetro porn (and I sometimes do) I'm most often imaging myself being the woman ;p

But there is something else about voyeurism other than projecting yourself into the situation - at least for me - other people's lustful emotions can rub off, without consciously picturing myself in any role. In much the same way that laughing can be infectious, I suppose, so can sexual excitement (and this is why I prefer clumsy bedroom "amateur" porn, the emotions conveyed are genuine, I just don't get that with clinical, studio-lit, directed commercial porn).

Amateur Pornography is an art form!

There is nothing more of a turn-off than that disastrous saxophone music that accompanies any of the so-called 'professional' pornography.

There is something that's more of a turn-off: namely, the grossly artificial passions of the participants.

Random wild guess: when one couple in the tribe has it off, all the others get horny and follow suit, therefore leading to more sex, leading to more children, leading to evolutionary advantage?

Let us also not forget that humans are adaptable creatures, with an ability to suppress instinct like no other animal on this planet can.

Of course, this is a subject in which there can be endless speculation - which is, I assume, why you decided to skirt the issue of paraphilias. Because we all know, my dear wolf, you don't know anyone interested in an alternate sexuality. :)

No, true, I don't. And if I did, I would treat them very sternly.

voyeurism is only one of a whole lot of fetishes. Go try to find 'evolutionary reasons' for all the others :)
