Defensive Marriage Act

The question of same-sex marriage is before the Supreme Court today. My Facebook home page is awash with people who have changed their profile pictures to show their support for marriage equality. I hope the Supreme Court's decision will make the law catch up with public opinion, but with garbage like Scalia involved, I'm not going to hold my ( Read more... )

The arguments against same-sex marriage are so asinine that I have to believe that reason will prevail, even with garbage like Scalia in the mix.

Wait, housing is expensive in Tucson?! Maybe my perceptions are skewed by coming from California, and it's not like I've compared housing costs across the country, but I definitely think of Tucson as a pretty inexpensive place to live, especially with the housing bubble behind us.

I hope that's the case. The arguments are definitely asinine, but the Supreme Court has bowed to asinine arguments in the past.

Well, she's lived most of her life in Kansas, where everything is completely deflated. Until 2010 (I think) it had the lowest minimum wage in the nation. For $150,000, you can get a pretty sweet house in a lot of communities.

I'll look at the market here in case she decides to move this way, but when she visited in the past she thought Southern Arizona looked ugly. Kansas isn't exactly lush, but it's easier to adjust to for someone coming from Korea, where there's a lot of rainfall and thus vegetation.

Well, I am fundamentally optimistic about same-sex marriage, which translates to optimism about the upcoming SCOTUS decisions. But maybe I'll be disappointed. We'll see. Either way, I still think same-sex marriage will be legalized not only in my lifetime, but within the next decade or so, at least in most states.

Haha, I've heard that about Southern Arizona from people used to more green and water. I think it's beautiful, though. I love the preference for natural landscaping here, and the desert has its own kind of beauty. Again, my perceptions could be skewed by coming from California, where it was technically a desert except that we used an unsustainable amount of water. (Water use might not be sustainable here, either, but it doesn't even begin to approach the level of decadence that is taken for granted in Southern California.)

I love the look of Southern Arizona myself, but I guess it's not for everyone.

I actually agree with my mother somewhat on the cost of housing here, but that has more to do with the fact that I'm a crazy socialist who thinks housing should be affordable even to someone making the lowest wages this society pays.
