There should be a verb that means to make fun of customersLatest victim was a guy who wanted to order an espresso with steamed milk. We asked him if he wanted a latte, explaining that it was made with espresso and steamed milk--that it was the drink he had just described. He gave us a look as if we were stupid, then repeated that he wanted an ( Read more... )

I've really been enjoying it. It does a great job of weaving political history with fictional narrative, telling how the political changes in Afghanistan have affected the various characters in different ways.

I have about seventy pages left.

I guess I'm not as adventurous. So far, it's only made me want to visit California.

Lately my cat has been licking the walls and floor of my bathroom

that's great news, so now you don't have to clean as often!

What you're going to get a lot, working in a non-Starbuck's coffee shop, is people who go to Starbuck's every day and expect every coffee shop to be like Starbuck's. Like I need to tell you! You should have a tally-board in the back and every time someone says, "That's not how they do it at Starbuck's" you put up another tick.

Though I don't think it was the case here.

But I bet you do get people coming in and half-glancing at you while they mumble, "Yeah, I want a Vente Frap-espresso with steamed light soy and a shot of almond..." or some such disaster that they get every day at Starbuck's and just assume that every place is the same. I mean I am sure that you can make anything that SB's makes... it just must be annoying to have to adopt their lingo.

I can't even tell you how often people order in Starbucks cup sizes. It's ridiculously high. And since I've never been a Starbucks patron (except for a brief episode of my life when I was infatuated with a barista named Crystal), I'm never sure what size they're ordering. It's scary that Starbucks has had that much of an impact on the language of coffee consumers.

tall = small
grande = medium
venti = large (20 oz. size)

As for that guy only being charged for an espresso and not being charged for a latte, well...I would have charged him for a latte. But, I'm a bitch like that.

I can remember venti, since it sounds like the Spanish word veinte, but I always get tall and grande mixed up. I guess it's the fact that I refuse to consider a 12-ounce cup tall.

Since I lose my ability to give a shit almost every time I'm there, I don't care if we undercharge people. Last night I gave a free refill on an Americano, and there have been a few times that people ordered a coffee with steamed milk; they didn't want a café au lait--they wanted coffee plus steamed milk.

I think there are plenty of people who are both cute and smart. I guess I would only take it as an insult if the implication was that your cuteness precluded intelligence--but that does happen a lot.

I think the cute and stupid combination occurs just as often, if not more often, in men. I personally don't find men very cute, but I think there are plenty of men who think of themselves as cute or attractive...and that's often all they have going for them.

If men can't put punctuation marks in the right places, it makes you wonder if they can put hands, tongues, and erections in the right places.

I missed all of you as well. I'll see you all at brunch next Sunday--and hopefully some time before that, too.
