I know some of you have been paying a whole lot of attention to the media recently, and in particular the financial troubles that we are in. Now, I know that this whole situation is confusing, and that this uncertainty causes a lot of stress. That stress in turn fuels a paranoia about the future, and a belief that things are gonna be really bad ( Read more... )

Life goes on, always has, always will. We'll survive. Make responsible purchasing decisions, support groups dealing with issues you care about (EFF, environmental groups, invest in alternative energy companies, etc). Try to be happy, try to make the people around you happy. Revel in the fact that we live in such amazing times.

Trust in people's good nature, or trust in the greed that makes them predictably react to the market. We've been making some huge fucking strides on renewable energy in the past few years (see Brazil).

If anything fucked up is going to happen, it's going to happen in India; it's the most overpopulated country I've seen and contains 1/3 of the world's dire poverty. Even there, the main problem they have to contend with is an organizational one (not using farmland efficiently, not industrializing fast enough) rather than a resource one.

A lot of people tried to convince me a malthusian crisis was approaching but I've had a hard time coming up with evidence to support this theory.
