No, but it adds a lovely nutty flavor. If you'd rather not do that step, just let the 1/2 cup of butter soften at room temperature and cream it with the sugar before continuing with the recipe like normal :)

Oh god, I wish I'd seen this before eating nothing but crap for 2 straight weeks and making the decision to clean up my eating. Bookmarking for the next time I need to bring a dish to a potluck though!!
