This is a wonderful meal because it doubles as a stimulating conversation piece.
I just had a friend over for sukiyaki with my sister and me. Years ago, when I was taking a Japanese language class, my teacher threw a sukiyaki party and it was so much fun I had to do it for myself. I've done this a couple of times now, and it's been incredibly fun every single time.
What you see before you is strip steak on the left, with, in descending order, firm tofu, zucchini, alternating green and orange bell peppers, white mushrooms and snow peas on the right.
I didn't take any pictures of the actual cooking, because I haven't yet come up with a particularly photogenic "after" shot, but for those who don't know what sukiyaki is, everyone at the table picked their ingredients, dipped them in egg and put them in a skillet. Add a little soy sauce, and serve everybody the ingredients they put in (assuming you can all remember which ones you put in -- we eventually just tried to be sure everyone got some of everything). I used something called "Sukiyaki sauce" that I bought at an Asian market (it's just chilis, garlic, sesame seeds and salt, so it's not necessary) which, incidentally, served as an inspiration for the whole enterprise in the first place.
