Foods for someone recovering from oral surgery?

May 29, 2008 10:56

I'm getting all four of my (impacted) wisdom teeth removed on Monday. I'm expecting to be eating non-solids for at least a few days afterwards. My boyfriend's a pretty good cook and a great nurse but he won't be around much, so I'll be fending for myself most days ( Read more... )

Alot of people have sensitivity to hot/cold food. I didnt. I really couldn't chew though. I lived on poached eggs, soft bread, jello and soup (and Italian Ice... yum!) for a few days. It wasnt that bad :)

I'm guessing that I will. I have sensitivity to hot & cold all the time, so I'm sure that having 4 holes in my gums won't help. :)

There's a fantastic gelato place near me and they have 1 litre take out containers. I think that I'm going to try to convince the boyfriend to go down there for me on Monday night.

Sounds like a plan... unless you do have sensitivity to cold? He could get you gelato before surgery AND after! Boyfriends are great :)

I ate macaroni and cheese, applesauce and instant mashed potatoes yum! When I had my wisdom teeth out no one told me not to eat any specific foods. I think I did some soup and pudding maybe but I was starving after I had my wisdom teeth out because to be put asleep you could not eat for however long beforehand. I think I was back to semi regular food in a day and a half :)

Yeah, I'm glad that my appointment is at 9am because I never eat breakfast anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal. I know that by the time I get home I'm going to be starving, though. I need to eat like every 2 hours in order to stay comfortably full. :)

I love cottage cheese, so if I get the okay from the dentist, I'm totally going to live off of it.

Heh, same here. Instant mashed potatoes = joy. I slept almost all day after the extraction, and the next day, I was eating normal food. I don't know about milk and yogurt and bacteria but I did have a shake or two right after leaving the dentist's... minus straw (no straws, that's important!)
I hope the surgery goes well for you! My teeth were impacted too, but the procedure was so painless and easy!

My boyfriend's a pharmacist and he told me that I shouldn't, but he didn't really explain. Your statement makes perfect sense to me. I dunno. If I really want cheese, I'm just going to eat it, damn it.

If they give you pain meds that must be taken with food, soup doesn't count as 'food' unless it is a thick soup or has more noodles/veggies/whatever than it does broth. Filling starches are your friend.

I don't remember the aftermath of my wisdom teeth removal, because my mother fed me codeine after a bowl of Campbell's chicken noodle, and I spent the next two days praying to the porcelain god. Granted, I didn't even feel my teeth, but I don't really recommend that particular coping mechanism. =)

Um, yeah. That doesn't sound like fun. A friend told me that they had a reaction to the anesthetic and threw up after the operation and the bile from their stomach burned the open sores in their mouth. Nice, eh? Haha.

Thanks for the tip, though. That is definitely helpful to know. I just found a wicked black bean soup recipe that fits the bill of filling starches, so I'll make sure I take my meds with something like that.

Oh GOD what an awful story. Your poor friend.

I had mine out a year ago, and I craved everything in sight. Everything I couldn't chew looked delicious. I coped by making filling shakes (no straw usage). I liked combining some coconut milk, pineapple chunks (I had some frozen), bananas and low-fat vanilla ice cream. I steered clear of making smoothies with fruits that have hard seeds, like strawberries. I did not want anything getting logged in the sockets... ick. I used the water rinser thing after 2 or 3 days; I didn't want to dislodge my blood clots and get dry sockets. My boss said having dry socket was more painful than childbirth.

Otherwise mashed potatoes, lowfat pistachio pudding (yum!). I got a little crazy at some point and pureed mac and cheese... and it wasn't too bad. Ohhhh not good memories, just wish you luck!

Oh! And I was old for a wisdom tooth removal candidate (26), and my recovery was just a few days. By day 7 I was back to chewing, though still using the little squizee-bottle to clean out the sockets. You'll be fine!
