As promised, fyrekaaat's cake was much more elaborate than her little sister's cake! I didn't have a lot of direction on this cake (which is probably my favorite way to create a cake for someone, for the record), and just had ( Read more... )

Love it! The bats are adorable. Love the castle tower look! That is one lucky 15 year old!

That's fantastic! Did the cake instructions really say to lay it on it's side? What cake book was it in? Anyway, if this was your first time using fondant you did amazingly well and the cake is just awesome. Great job!

Yeah, it did say that - even had a lovely picture that was completely mess-free!

I've done lots of fondant, and it's never been a big issue - but it's also usually not quite so vertical! I would definitely do this differently another time!

This is the first time anything ever said to do that. I was highly skeptical, and clearly with good reason!

She must have been using some completely differently textured fondant, though.

It was one of Debbie Brown's books - I can get the Amazon link if you want. Her designs are fantastic, but phew ...

D'oh! Now I recognize you from the cake decorating community. That is seriously crazy. I wonder if it would work better if it was frozen first. I think I just got one of her books for Christmas, the Magical Cakes one, or something like that. It's got some very cool cakes in it.

It does indeed! I don't recommend (soft) MMF for the vertical-type stuff ;) I wonder about the freezing too, although I really think it was just too darned heavy (without enough stiffness) to hold its own.

I still plan to try a bunch more of her cakes - with new experience/knowledge ;)
