I am making the triple chocolate peppermint trifle from this months Martha and i just noticed it calls for an alcohol. My husband doesnt really drink so i was wondering would i just make a simple syrup or skip it all together?

thanks!

*EDIT* it calls for a chocolate flavored liqueur

Sounds yummy (then again anything with chocolate and peppermint does!)

What sort of alchohol? If it is just for flavoring I'd guess you could find something else instead...

It seems then the chocolate liquer is just for flavor and not so much for texture and all(although it would add some moisture). You may be able to find something without the alchohol if you need too.

I like the way you think :) Enjoy that Christmas morning!!

Is it a trifle? Or is it a drink?
If it's a drink just use simple syrup and the appropriate extract.
If it's a trifle it depends on how it's used in the recipe.

Or you could go the extra distance and make kahlua yourself, just don't use vodka. Add that as the chocolate liqueur. There are anumber of homemade chocolate/coffee/Kahlua liqueur recipes online.

leaving out that drink word could be a problem. my husband doesnt drink and the recipe calls for alcohol.

I'd totally go for a thin chocolate sauce instead then (or, perhaps, chocolate mint if you want to up the mint level a bit). The extra moisture from a sauce is definitely important for a trifle (mousse, crunchy bits, cake, sauce, repeat were the layers we did in catering) both for extra flavor and to keep your cake from drying out

Does he not drink as in, can't/won't consume any alcohol at all? Because unless it calls for huge amounts, I'm thinking a little chocolate liqueur isn't likely to be an issue.

If it's out of the question for whatever reason, I'd probably leave it out and up the other chocolates slightly (since you say it's "triple chocolate").

A friend of mine doesn't drink alcohol and while he is sort of ok with small amounts in food healthwise, he can always *taste* if it's there and doesn't like the flavour. So for him, using the liqueur would not make it dangerous or unacceptable but it definately would make it less enjoyable.
