I seem to recall hearing that Maine is famous for its lobster. (But I'm not from the US, so I may be wrong.)

Nope, you're right. We're definitely known for our 'lobstah'.

Cod and haddock are popular white fishes, deep fried or baked, or baked and stuffed with seafood stuffing (containing crab, lobster, and/or scallop meat). Steamers (clams) are popular as well as scallops and native shrimp. Seafood deep fried and served with French fries and cole slaw is common. Lobsters are steamed, or baked and stuffed, or served 'lazy' (that is, cleaned out of the shell) with melted butter.

Popular soup: clam chowder. Not to be confused with Manhattan clam chowder, which has a tomato base.

A popular red meat dish: pot roast.

A popular breakfast dish: blueberry pancakes. The blueberries are in the batter. Not to be confused with plain pancakes topped in blueberry sauce.

These are just off the top of my head.

There's a cookbook by Marjorie Standish that would probably help you a lot: http://www.amazon.com/Cooking-Down-East-Marjorie-Standish/dp/0892723718

Are they still eating jello with everything in Utah? I remember that vividly as a kid.
