Romany (Gypsy) recipes

Jun 17, 2008 05:58

My principal character in my current WIP is the son of a Romany woman (Dad's Greek, Mom's Rom), and I need Romany or what we gadje (those not lucky enough to be born to appropriately Rom parents) would call Gypsy dishes & recipes.  Any helpful souls out there with a few?  Already have sarmi and musaka.  Any others?

- is always a necessary bit of info with a food-based question. I could give you some Transylvanian Gypsy recipes but that would be a waste of my time and yours if your character is an English Gypsy.

You could give us Transylvanian Gypsy recipes anyway...though the extra information is very good to know.

How far did a typical gypsy group/clan/family travel? That would affect what different things a particular cook might know too.

Mom was actually supposed to be among the population of Roma in Greece, one of the Xoraxai Roma. It would be more likely she would have picked up Transylvanian recipes than English. They're in America now, modern urban fantasy.

I doubt very much that they would be cooking Transylvanian-style then. Try Greek recipes; anything like souvlaki would be absolutely plausible for gypsies or transhumant Balkan shepherds. (They might just have a Roma name for it though.)

Echoing the 'where' question, which will make a huge difference. When, of course, will also matter.
