On the question of the family's off-the-wall recipes, where are they from? Most places have some specific foods that will tend to cause raised eyebrows when mentioned elsewhere, but they vary depending on locale.

Some of these suggestions might depend on where in Maryland the family is from. Some of these things will be more suited to a family from the eastern shore or the state capital than from someone from the mountains in the west

Yeah...I'm from Maryland. The first thing that came to mind was a softshell crab sandwich. You could add Old Bay mayo for a gourmet touch

Depending on where they're from in Maryland, there's also the Fractured Prune, which is the mother of all donut shops. It is amazing.
