Hello all! As you've all probably noticed, I haven't posted a caption contest this week. This is because I am and I'm going to be rather busy this weekend so I won't have the time to moderate one
( Read more... )
And to start the ball rolling, I have several favourite scenes:
From the TV series: THE CLIFF SCENE. I love it because it's hilarious and ridiculously impossible, and because we see the boys get wet. And they are all so adorable in this scene. And uh, that probably shows how superficial I am but never mind. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, it was this scene that got me into the Hornblower fandom, so I'm eternally grateful for it.
From the Book: Flying Colours, the carriage hand-holding. That was just such a wonderful character moment between Bush and Hornblower, and shows how much Hornblower really cares for Bush. And, ofcourse, it set my slash goggles aflame.
From the Movie: Removez le Cap!!!!!! Bush's total incompetence at French had me giggling and replaying that scene OVER AND OVER AND OVER again when I first saw the movie. ♥
I so agree with the TV series scene... XD It's hilarious and adorable and ... <3 *insert squeel*
I haven't read the books yet. Should seriously start catching up with that. *fails much* Problem is, there are still way too many books I still have to read. And I have way too little time. *pouts*
As for the movie. It has been ages ago since I last saw it. And I seriously should see it again. Perhaps this evening. If the others at home don't complain... ^_^"
I'm currently typing up, along with anteros_lmc a three part guide to the Hornblower universe. There will be a separate part for the books, tv series and "other" which ofcourse includes the movie, the Hornblower guide and Parkinson's 'biography'. It's been put on hold for a while for study purposes, but hopefully I'll actually get it completed soon *g*.
YES YOU SHOULD SEE IT AGAIN. =) It's so much fun, even though so much has been left out from the books - including THE HAND HOLDING. *glares at Hollywood*
A three part guide? That would be so awesome!! :-) Looking forward to see it arrive!!! ^_^
I KNOW I SHOULD! I AM GOING TO FANGIRL SO MUCH WHEN I DO... XD Hand holding? Oh!! Damn Hollywood! They should have kept that! I would have loved to see that!!! :) *must read the books one say!!! Must read them!! If only for scenes like that ... XD*
I may have to second the cliff-scene - it's just so brilliant and basically sums up why I love the series so much. Hilariousness and hot comraderie. What more can one ask for?
[[This said I'd also like to add: any scene in which Horatio doesn't get the joke, any scene with Major Edrington's snarkiness, any scene where Horatio and Archie look at each other adoringly, the scene where Horatio asks Bush to be his Lieutenant (so so like a marriage proposal!!), and Archie's death scene for sheer heart-breaking beautiful-ness.]]
As for the books, I'd say the whole latter half of Lieutenant Hornblower...from where Horatio cradles Bush's face onwards - so much love!
-cough- Right. So I have utterly failed in this excercise and am completely unable to select ONE scene. XD
When I read a question that begins "What's your favourite ...", I break out in cold sweat and get that nervous twitching of the eye... ;) I'd have to name pretty much all scenes with Bush in them, because TV Bush is heaven; and all scenes featuring Archie (outside D&D) for sheer cuteness! =)
When it comes to the books, I have to admit that no scene has stuck in my memory as particularly great. *dodges the rotten eggs*
The movie? Hmmmmmm. I really liked the scene in which Hornblower makes that hapless midshipman run back and forth and back again. Because it's SO fifties! :D *dodges another round of eggs*
Argh I'm the same! So difficult. Especially now when I watch Hornblower just about every scene will have me in a fit of giggles.
Ahh, the books are another kettle of fish altogether. Admittedly they aren't as fun as the TV show, but they have their moments (Hornblower's blackcurrant jam tantrum, manly passionate hand-holding with Bush, etc.)
I never saw the movie. I tried watching it on youtube but then couldn't - I know I really ought to revel in the 50s camp glory but I couldn't quite get over the American accents. Terribly distracting. XD
I love the bit in the first episode where Horatio drops the compass over the side, that was the point where I thought, "Hee! I like you!"
I also love the scene in Mutiny (or possibly Retribution) where Archie and Horatio are in the cabin and Archie's sprawled out doing everything bar saying, "Look, if you get rid of Sawyer I'll give you a blow job" I love manipulative!Archie.
Nodbear writes : what an indulgence, licence to squee over ones favourite bits and just when I cannot have time or much internet access Oh groan. Hopefully back soon.
Sir Edward wonders if he gets a go and I have tentatively promised he does - after all since no one else, no other real person that is , has had to watch themself written up and acted out to the same extent in both TV and Book so I think he deserves a go .And it gives him a nice nostalgic morning comparing the inadequacies of the seamanship on display at various places in the narrative ... when he is not sneaking over to watch makeover and antiques programmes on daytime telly.

At the beginning? =)
Oh that "hey we're in the middle of the ocean but I can see the coastline in the distance" scene? Yeah, that was pretty great.
I love manipulative!Archie.
