Hello all! As you've all probably noticed, I haven't posted a caption contest this week. This is because I am and I'm going to be rather busy this weekend so I won't have the time to moderate one ( Read more... )

*gasp!* But how is one to choose???

I may have to second the cliff-scene - it's just so brilliant and basically sums up why I love the series so much. Hilariousness and hot comraderie. What more can one ask for?

[[This said I'd also like to add: any scene in which Horatio doesn't get the joke, any scene with Major Edrington's snarkiness, any scene where Horatio and Archie look at each other adoringly, the scene where Horatio asks Bush to be his Lieutenant (so so like a marriage proposal!!), and Archie's death scene for sheer heart-breaking beautiful-ness.]]

As for the books, I'd say the whole latter half of Lieutenant Hornblower...from where Horatio cradles Bush's face onwards - so much love!

-cough- Right. So I have utterly failed in this excercise and am completely unable to select ONE scene. XD

When I read a question that begins "What's your favourite ...", I break out in cold sweat and get that nervous twitching of the eye... ;)
I'd have to name pretty much all scenes with Bush in them, because TV Bush is heaven; and all scenes featuring Archie (outside D&D) for sheer cuteness! =)

When it comes to the books, I have to admit that no scene has stuck in my memory as particularly great. *dodges the rotten eggs*

The movie? Hmmmmmm. I really liked the scene in which Hornblower makes that hapless midshipman run back and forth and back again. Because it's SO fifties! :D *dodges another round of eggs*

That midshipman scene was hilarious!!!!! Hornblower is so cruel XD

Argh I'm the same! So difficult. Especially now when I watch Hornblower just about every scene will have me in a fit of giggles.

Ahh, the books are another kettle of fish altogether. Admittedly they aren't as fun as the TV show, but they have their moments (Hornblower's blackcurrant jam tantrum, manly passionate hand-holding with Bush, etc.)

I never saw the movie. I tried watching it on youtube but then couldn't - I know I really ought to revel in the 50s camp glory but I couldn't quite get over the American accents. Terribly distracting. XD

PS YOUR ICON IS WIN! :D

I don't think I ever even got that far - awesome though Gregory Peck is, I'd just finished watching the TV series and was suffering a bit from withdrawal and it was all clashing a bit too much with the image I'd already previously formed of Hornblower and the gang, so I couldn't really watch it. XD But argh I fully understand what you mean in point 3 - in the books I have a hard time reading The Happy Return for the same reason (and being half-French myself however much I love Hornblower I do spend an awful lot of time, especially during The Frogs and the Lobsters, trying not to get unbelievably irritated by it all).

Well, to be fair to them they tried to show the other side of that what with Mariette and all (woefully, woefully under-developed character and seems to have been inserted solely to prove Hornblower wasn't gay - but we know better, don't we ladies? ;) ) anyway, they did try to question it a bit using her. Just not nearly enough - mainly I think hilarious though Moncoutant is, he pretty much sums up what is so cringe-worthy about their portrayal of the French, regardless of whether they are Royalists or Republicans. <.<

If the purpose was to show Hornblower wasn't gay, they should NOT have brought Mariette in...The awkward kisses ARE awkward. XD

Yeah, I know. All scenes involving supposed romance between Mariette and Horatio were pretty painful to watch. >< FAIL. But this is all made better when Archie darts across a bridge about the explode to save him. =)

Much as I'd love to see Bush working his magic on the laydees (or, y'know, gentlemen...) I don't think 2D2N in Kingston would've really worked what with Archie dying on a hospital bed and all. =S It'd have seemed much too callous. I couldn't help but be annoyed that Horatio had the audacity to look mildly pleased at having been promoted to commander - nvm him out partying with his new BFF. XD (That said, I always had a hard time seeing Horatio partying. You're so right, Bush would be out there having fun and Horatio would be in his corner with his spherical geometry and quite happy like that =] )

None taken! I love Archie Kennedy and I think A&E expanding his character was a pretty good decision because Horatio on his own is considerably less interesting than when he has a sidekick/BFF as a foil, but I fully agree that so many of the great moment in Lieutenant Hornblower are completely lost because of it. Fruitbasket! Is love. XD

And yes, The Happy Return is pain for several reasons.

Heh, that's funny, I really liked movie Barbara and I thought she was less of a tiresome, prettily groomed girl than any of the men on the ship! :D
