That is the LAST connection I was expecting...

I don't even know where to begin with this...

So on the whole, I am indifferent to the entire 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon. I have, however, been keeping my eye on the rumors of a movie, because I'm curious to see how the fans and those who hate the book react. I've also joked that the only way you can get me interested in the movie is if Ioan was ( Read more... )

As I said, I'm not in a position to judge. But man, the expression on my face when I realized that E.L James might have written Hornblower fic back in the day...

This is just bizarre beyond belief!

O.o Well, that was unexpected! I also haven't read 50SoG, so I can't really be for or against it (for contrast's sake, I read all four Twilight books specifically so I could know what I'm saying when I talk about how awful they are), but, yeah, the involvement of any Hornblower alumni would at least give me some impetus to care.

Also, as a side note, Six Degrees of Hornblower, in the grand tradition of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, should totally be a thing.

With the mathematical passion HH was known for, perhaps it should be Six Degrees, Fifteen Minutes, and Thirty-Seven Seconds of Hornblower.

I've done variations of that from time to time. I've managed to connect it to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Master and Commander, Spider-Man, (Tobey Maguire version), 300, and Christopher Nolan's Batman. I think I even got a connection to The Godfather once, but I'd need to re-calculate to be sure. I'm really hoping someday I could connect it to Citizen Kane.

Ooh, I would love to see your reasoning for these! I can kind of guess the Spider-Man one (Spider-Man -> Marvel -> Fantastic Four -> Reed Richards -> Ioan Gruffudd -> Hornblower), and, yeah, definitely M&C, but this sounds like a fun thing to do overall (possibly as a group, O Modly One?)

Six degrees of Hornblower, absolutely. Fifty shades of Hornblower could be fun too, in a different way!

I'd actually consider doing something with the idea myself if I wasn't completely clueless about writing smut. That one Amelia/Hornblower fic was about the best I can manage in that department.

Agh, stop my brain before it is too late...!!! (And that's *without* having read 50 Shades...!!)

Oh, you mean the post canon episodes. It would figure that her husband wrote terrible fanfiction too. Without his Kennedy, there is no Horatio.

Vive Le LKU!

I do admit that I thought Loyalty and Duty were the weakest of the series (stretching out one line from the books into a subplot? Really?). Still, they could have been worse, and I will take as much Ioan as Horatio as possible.

But it might have been fun to have Kennedy still around. Maybe if they ever brought it back they could come up with a twin brother so Jamie could come back...

Or it could have been a bad dream, he's really married to Archie, not the dowdy sack.

Yes this. Married to Archie I mean.

Oh, so it's HIS fault!!

Seriously, Loyalty and Duty were really, really bad. Like, I've only seen them once bad. Horatio as an ice-cold SOB, Styles as a bumbling idiot, horrible dialogue and they couldn't fit in ONE LINE about Kennedy ANYWHERE?! Blech.

If Ioan ever gets around to bankrolling more HH movies, he had better not hire that guy! That's all I'm gonna say.

The part that always got me, as mentioned above, was the fact that one line from the books about Napoleon's brother and his American wife turned into a whole subplot, complete with a horrendous American accent. Like you, I've only ever watched those two once. I wish they could have ended on more of a high note (or at least gotten through Hornblower and the Atropos. Treasure hunting Horatio? Yes please.)
