To make a long story very short: the past 3 weeks have been crisis-mode at work. I've been at work for 10+ hours a day. About 25% of that is actually getting stuff fixed. The other 75% is the politicking problem-fixing dance of the large corporation. This entire thing is working on my very. last. nerve ( Read more... )

As someone who has worked in a large corporation for 16 years: RUN, because it's always like that. It may go through brief periods of improvement depending on the composition of upper management, but basically what you're experiencing is what you get. I was ready to commit murder today because once again, something that should have been a simple decision made by one person turned into everyone chiming in with their input followed by a decision that satisfied only a few. (Out of six people involved, two of them were happy, two of them ended up stressed and burdened with more work, and two of them, including me, threw up their hands and effectively went "do whatever the fuck you want, I don't care anymore.") Bad times.

Yeah. That's pretty much what I get out of the past year, and also what my dad said (he left big corporate to start his own thing 15 years ago, and never looked back). This is the first time I've worked for a large company, since, previously, 20-odd to 60-odd was the norm.

I can't leave right now, for practical reasons: I need leave for potential health issues covered (Quebec is excellent for this, but you gotta be employed!), and I don't always hate it (for example: I genuinely like my boss, and my immediate colleague) - if I did, I'd run. And I need start-up capital for dream job/house/etc, which is attainable on a 5-year plan if you combine my husband's salary and mine (and keep living on sensible amounts) - otherwise, achieving that before turning 40 becomes questionable, and I'm not sure if I'm willing to trade a job I hate slightly less for 5 extra years of corporate BS.

But, ARGH. I think I need to search harder and find the zen of indifference.
