Totally tangential, but I ended up yelling at the TV during Lloyd Roberts' old-man rambling about how "Vancouver 2010" has unified the nation in a way we haven't seen since Terry Fox's run in 1980 or Expo '67 and a bunch of other long-past events.

Seriously? These are the cultural touchstones you're using? The most recent one he cites was THIRTY YEARS AGO--a significant proportion of Canadians aren't even old enough to remember it, and that doesn't even consider the even more significant proportion of present-day Canadians who immigrated after these events and therefore have no emotional connection to them AS Canadians. (In short, how relevant can these events be when a bunch of Canadians can't even remember them? Bah.)

I was at a cafe a little while ago and someone had put on a very early Skinny Puppy album. When I went up to order something, I asked whose choice it was and the person at the counter said it was his. I complimented it and told him that I'd gone to see the album release tour -- that it had been a great show and a very formative one for me.

Fifteen minutes later, walking away down the street, I did the mental math and realized that that concert was almost certainly before the person I was speaking to had been born.
