Hohenheim had thought he was lost in the desert when the Xingese found him. He had run from Xerxes as far as he could, trying to escape his new reality. There was no outrunning the voices howling in his altered soul. Every time he felt dehydrated to the point of death, the Philosopher’s Stone healed him. Hohenheim hadn’t known what to do or where to go. He’d never been outside of his master’s control and had no idea how to live on his own.

Alone in the desert had been a good, honest sort of lost, a life in complete disarray. But when Ping and Xue brought him to their trading destination, Shin-Tsui, Hohenheim discovered a whole new type of lost. He hadn’t seen so many people, not even in Xerxes’s market district, except maybe on high holidays and people flocked to it to buy sacrifices for temple.

In this new city, he had no idea what anyone was saying. Even surrounded by humanity, Hohenheim couldn’t feel more alone. He looked so different, tall, tanned and golden. He was dawn to their dusk and he thought he had to be the first non-Xingese many of them had seen judging by the outright stares. A few brave souls even came up to him and felt his long hair and beard as if their fingers needed to prove it was real and not spun from metal. He didn’t know where to begin to fit in. He needed to find himself.
