Daughter of a noble family without servants, Mei had never lacked dreams of romance and adventure, or drudgery that made dreams vital and rich. While she wandered through rain to find seasonings her grandpa liked, she was journeying to unknown, surely magical, lands. While she washed grit from coarse rice, she was on a starlit terrace, wearing a glittering qipao, drinking expensive tea, and loving a tall, gallant prince more deeply with each word they exchanged.
Appearances never overcame her, even in Armestris when friends were dying-even when her prince was an angry bean; her love an armour shell. Unromantically, she bled and fought past strength. Came back empty-handed from her quest, and washed rice-still dreaming. The boy trapped in steel had trusted and found his dream and so would she. She only wished his dream had included her.
One day, he was at her door. Setting his pack down, wiping golden hair. Mei’s plain clothes and huge dusty house suddenly rushed her like grey wolves. She bowed, stammered and finally got him some water. He smiled, with warm cheeks.
Mei prepared dinner with nervously trembling hands. But soon Al wandered in from the library; he’d learned cookery since regaining a stomach, and didn’t mind helping.
Al chopped vegetables and Mei washed rice, shoulders brushing together gently. Mei wondered in the busy silence if she had ever known what romance was. When her dark eyes suddenly drew Al’s glance, the touch she’d dreamed of forever was romance, adventure, surprise.
