Title: An Act of Charity
Author: capnhoozits
Series: Brotherhood/Manga
Word Count: 545
Rating: T
Characters: Scar, Scar's Brother (who I named Mattas), and a friend of Scar's Brother who is up for a challenge.
Summary: Pre-series. Scar's brother tries to do him a favor.
Author's note: I slapped this together so quickly I almost forgot there was a word count :P

Morning after edit: I'm so mad! I had added a bunch more to make up the word count but I didn't copy and paste all of it because it was 1:30 in the morning and I didn't keep the word doc and I don't remember it all anyway so now it's lost. Thanks for listening.;_;
Disclaimer: I do this for love, not money.

Little Brother’s face was brick red as he stormed past, furiously ignoring his elder brother. Mattas knew it probably wasn’t wise, but he gripped his brother’s arm to stop him.

“Hold on!” he said in a light tone. “No greeting for me?”

The younger brother wrested his arm free and glared. “Your joke wasn’t funny,” he growled darkly.

Mattas spread his hands. “It wasn’t a joke! My friend Amaya was happy to volunteer.” He grinned. “Think of it as an act of charity. I seriously wanted you to see what you’d be missing!”

“If I wasn’t already fully resigned to the vows I’ll be taking, I wouldn’t be taking them!” his brother spat back.

Mattas nodded calmly. “So…it didn’t go too well, huh?”

Little Brother looked away, his rage giving way to embarrassment. “My…” He lowered his voice, although there was no one within hearing distance. “My tooth got caught on her lip and cut her.”

Mattas’ mouth dropped open. “You bit her?”

“It was an accident!” his brother hissed back. “I didn’t know what I was doing! Next time you’re feeling charitable, give alms to the poor!” And with that, he stormed off.

Mattas sighed. He hoped Amaya would see the humor in it, but even he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

……………………………………

The young initiate’s long, angry strides had slowed, but his face still burned. He had been walking around for nearly an hour, trying to calm down before he went back to the temple. He was no longer even sure what he was angry about. He felt his brother had played a trick on him, setting that girl after him. The poor girl certainly got the worst of it. What an idiot she must think him!

“Oh, now, there’s a face!”

The young man looked up with a start. There was Amaya, standing right there in the road! He felt ashamed all over again at the slight bump he could see on her lip. He looked away.

“I’m…sorry…”

The young woman laughed, not mockingly as he would have expected, but with simple good nature. “Don’t worry about it. I suppose I’m the one who should be sorry.”

The initiate looked at her, startled. “Why? I’m the one who…”

“No, actually,” Amaya cut him off. “Let’s blame that brother of yours, the one who thinks he’s so clever.”

The young man sighed. “Perhaps. But I should have known better than to give in to temptation.”

Amaya shrugged. “Well, there’s no real harm done, is there?”

The young man considered the girl’s lips. “Will your parents ask how you came by that?”

“Oh, it’ll go down by the time I go home. Don’t you worry about that. You just be a good priest, then. All right?”

“I’ll try.”

The smile she gave him did more to make him realize what he might be missing.
