Three men stood on a hill overlooking Kanda. Sounds of people busy at work drifted up to them, the hammering and sawing mingled with shouts and phrases of song. Ishvalans hadn’t had much joy to sing about for the past six years, but the old songs had come back quickly.
Two of the men were in wool uniforms; the third was in more practical clothing, loose-fitting cotton. Miles removed his dark glasses and wiped the sweat from his eyes.
“I’m glad I lived to see this,” he said. “I just wish it had been winter when I saw it.”
“I don’t care how damn hot it is,” Roy remarked in reply, grinning. “I’m just grateful to be here.”
Scar remained silent. He supposed they each had their own dreams to fulfill. Miles' dream was to see his ancestral homeland for the first time. Mustang was seeing his dream of a new Amestris come alive, one in which Ishval received its rightful validation.
Scar’s own dream had not been about his future. He hadn’t anticipated even having a future. The dreams he had now were of the past, and they were troubling. He hoped someday the nightmares would fade and he could enjoy the present.
