Sometimes Dee looks at her childhood photo, tracing the shy smile and innocence of a girl that had only ever been Anastasia Dualla. She had been the very picture of a perfect Sagittaron daughter, obedient, demurring, never speaking out of turn. But while everyone around her faced the world with open palms, Anastasia found that one of hers was always curled into a fist. She started to question, to expect, to demand better. Better when her young cousin's face was twisted into a bitter grimace because his family refused the tetanus vaccine. Better when her friends left school to work from sunrise to twilight, their bright and hopeful minds dimming to a flicker of resignation in order to feed their families. Better when Tom Zarek decided he should be able to speak for her by taking the lives of innocents to make a point ( ... )

Ah, thank you so much, I love this ♥ I found Dee to be such an interesting character in the canon and her death was heartbreaking.

I'm so glad you used the photo.

Better when her young cousin's face was twisted into a bitter grimace because his family refused the tetanus vaccine.

I love this. Dee has always been such a quietly determined person, and I love the complexity of her relationship with her family.

But there's also her combat training - imperfect but servicable, enough that she can't help but think that Billy might still be alive if he had remembered her for more than her smile and her kisses. Her talent in avionics, which gives the Blackbird her bearings and voice and Kara Thrace her life, ultimately all for the sake of Lee Adama.

And this just breaks my heart. She just does so much and gets nothing for it, and I love how delicately you expressed that.

Thank you so, so much ♥♥

Yay, I'm really glad you liked it!

I do think Dee is vastly underappreciated in canon and fandom! It wasn't really until Adama tried to use her as a silent sounding board and she was all "You know what? I have opinions. And you are going to listen to them" that I really came to properly appreciate her myself. But yes, quiet determination is totally her, and even though I was spoiled for the fact that she would die at some point, how it happened was totally devastating :(

Thanks for your kind comments, and I really hope someone writes some Starbuck and Cain stuff for you because guh they're pretty amazing!

She really is. She wasn't always used cleverly in the show (love quadrangle of doom, right, but at least she was less of a doormat in it than Sam. Her refusal to just accept it was oddly touching). I think she's one of the characters who evolves the most over the course of the series, too. And I definitely think her death was the best one on the show.

Thank /you/ for such a great story! I hope so too, I have a deep, deep love (and lust) for Starbuck : )

The love quadrangle of doom really wanted to make me hurl things at the television! I love Kara and Lee, but they were so gross in that whole arc and Dee was the only one who came out looking like an adult. I agree about the evolution of character, but what I love about BSG is that almost everyone evolves (except maybe Helo?) and I loved having my opinions of characters completely switched around. The circumstances of Dee's death is referred to in her character card for the BSG board game and while I laugh outwardly, I cry on the inside, sob.

Show me a BSG fan who doesn't love Starbuck and I'll show you a liar, that's what I think! XD

I knooow... sigh. That being said, I guess the selfish/immature aspect of the Kara/Lee relationship is part of why we love them, isn't it? Though not when it hurts other people, I agree. Mm... I don't know. You're probably right, but when it started going all mythical and generally crazy (a.k.a the second half of season 3 and season 4, which doesn't exist) they started mistaking hallucinations for character development, I think? But you're right. Characters like Baltar or Sharon or the President (or even Caprica Six, in her various forms) were fascinating to watch unfold.

I know some! But I don't believe them either : )

Haha yes, my caveat in recommending BSG is always "It's practically perfect!!! ... up until halfway through season 3". But I loved that the characters weren't static and how much things changed for them, like what happened to adorable, eager to please Gaeta of the miniseries :(

I agree. I love how they don't gloss over the consequences of grief as they tend to do in TV shows - how it breaks and changes people, everyone really.

Dee fic. Always relevant to my interests.

This is such a lovely look at her, and I love (lovelovelove) the idea that Dee is the voice who brings them home every time. I've always thought that, but never seen it expressed this well. =D

Thanks for your comment! And yes, I always loved that Dee was kind of "the voice of home" for the pilots especially so I'm glad you agree :)
