So this review has been a bit overdue. I actually finished that ep over ten days ago, but I have been either too busy or too lazy to type and post this ;)
Which would explain your lack of...activity...in certain other threads...*smiles sweetly* Or else someone is just a little bit too eager. I haven't been any later than usual ;)
*sighs fondly* Ah, Doctor. Always getting yourself in a mess and needing the humans to do the job beautifully. ^.^ Yes, and who takes the credit and bitches at them at the end of the day? ;)
I am really loving Jo; she's adorable. :) She so is! :D You probably haven't seen any Liz Shaw, since her episodes don't feature the Master. They are both so completely different, and equally excellent. I wonder where Sarah Jane will stand regarding all that; I know she's a huge favourite, so I'm curious.

*gulps and shuts my mouth quickly* O.o

Ah, well; gotta love him, anyway! ^.^
probably haven't seen any Liz Shaw,
Nah, not yet. She's very briefly (about three minutes, I'd say) in 'The Five Doctors', so that's all I've seen of her so far. Even the few Three novelizations I have don't feature her; I have one with Jo, and another with Sarah Jane. No--wait; the Sarah Jane one is with Four; I have two with Jo.
I wonder where Sarah Jane will stand regarding all that; I know she's a huge favourite, so I'm curious.
So am I. So far, aside from the Modern episodes that feature her, I've only seen her in 'The Five Doctors' and 'The Ark in Space', so I haven't seen enough to really get a solid impression. (Which, oddly, that latter is the only time yet that I've seen Harry, and I've decided that I like him a lot. So...yeah. Classic case of Irish Isn't Making Sense Again, lol!)
Re: Liz: yeah, I'm not surprised, she had only one season with Three-Jo had, well, three. Makes sense that she'd be less represented in the books too. She's epic though. Snarky scientists all the way!
And I shall make no sarcastic comment about the lack of love for companions who don't get to meet the Master… :D
I love Jo in this one! Also, it highlights that even if Jo is clearly attractive and the source of desire to men around her, she is in charge of her own sexuality. She chooses for herself and is respected for it. Sadly this is something that early 80's Who get worse in.
Oh yay, sea Devils! I'm currently re-watching that one on my own. :)
I think it was a bid from John Nathan-Turner to increase popularity. I have wondered that the fact that he was gay may have been why Tegan and Peri was presented in such a stereotypical sexualized way. You know, knowing the motions but not really feeling it, so no feeling for the nuances. It gets better somehwere halfway through Six first season, after some massive criticism.
Curse of Peladon is one of my favorite stories, for all the reasons you mention.
I love Alpha Centauri, (you know, come to think of it, New Who is not the first Doctor Who to delve into alternate sexualities, Captain Jack is not all that new in the series, we have Alpha centauri, who is a hermaphrodite (a "guy" with a high girly voice no less) but we also have the young woman in the 5th Doctor story, "Kinda" who has the seven fathers.
Anyway, love Alpha, a completely non-humanoid alien, yet such a compassionate one, shy, scared, snarky and opinionated, prone to both panic and procedure, practical common sense and squees of joy.
A complete person in every way.
(If anyone is interested, I also wrote a short drabble about Alpha Centauri's viewpoint on the Doctor, and how s/he dealt with the Doctor having no official documentation. It's called " Alien's Eye ViewJo, agreed, is awesome in this story. (And I love the dress

Re: Alpha Centauri and sexuality in classic!Who: quite true! It was really pretty progressive for the 70's :) And Alpha is quite delightful, yes.
Jo, agreed, is awesome in this story. (And I love the dress.) I forever squeeing and girlcrushing about Jo's outfits. (And Liz's before her, to be fair.)
I loved all the cultural and situational background to this story. The religion, the social aspects, the diplomats, different races and viewpoints, the struggle between tradition and advancement, between the two worldviews of the men who'd raised him, even the fact that the king was himself half alien. (From their viewpoint.) Yes! All of this was absolutely excellent, good world-building is fantastic.
(And the Doctor and Jo being snarky and sassy at each other all through it was just icing on the cake. :D) Always! :D

Jo was just so good. ♥

There will be a Sea Devils review next
Yay! :D *can't wait*
Jo: "Which way now?"
Three: "Which way indeed? Eenie, meenie, mynie, mo."
[cue roar in the distance]
Jo: "Meenie?"
[they head away from the roar]
This sounds familiar. I think I saw this clip on one of my DVD sets in the bonus features.
Jo [full princess act, about the TARDIS crash]: "The whole affair was most deplorable. The pilot was exceedingly inefficient."
*sighs* Yes, he does have those moments. *nods*
Jo [about Alpha Centauri]: "No, I think he's rather sweet. Or is he a she ( ... )
