Man’s enemies are not demons, but human beings like himself.
--Lao Tzu
Demons, they said, had no good deeds.
All demons ever wanted were to wreck human beings. To destroy them. To break them. To poison them with bad things. Demons were said to be possessed by the most awful things. Humans looked down on them, feared them, prayed for them to not to take a part of anything in their lives.
But when it came to angels, it was completely the opposite.
Angels were said to be graced by the most honorable things. Humans looked up to them, loved them, prayed for them to always watch over them in whatever manners they were doing. Angels, they said, had the purest hearts.
Centuries ago, demons would have no hesitation to kill angels whenever their paths crossed. Angels were as strong as demons, but demons always did whatever it took to win. The killings started small and subtle, until the numbers grew large. Unexpectedly, the angels wanted to revenge for their fallen siblings, and a battle of war started between heaven and hell. The war had consumed so many lives that the highest authorities in both places made an agreement to stop the war. Each party must not lay a finger on each other, moreover to slay each other. There was said to be great punishment for those who broke the rules. The war needed to stop, and it was final.
Because they were, after all, brothers.
The regulation stayed until the very day.
Demons couldn’t go to heaven and angels couldn’t go to hell, but there was a place where both of them could meet.
It was the Purgatory.
***
Every creature was born with a purpose.
Kris sometimes wondered what his was.
Angels were assigned with a task whenever they descended down to earth, but most of the demons were forbidden from going. For as long as he lived, he had never seen demons were allowed to go down to earth, unless it was a very important task.
One day, Kris was about to accompany Baekhyun, one of his brothers, to sneak down to earth. He was supposed to meet Baekhyun in the back entrance, but halfway there, his attention was captured by a certain person who had just flown back to the Purgatory.
It was certainly an angel.
He was standing between his fellow angels, but his raven hair stood out the most. The angel was laughing, and when he did, his eyes were twinkling and there was something endearing about him. Heck, all of the angels were beautiful, but this one was different.
Kris’ curiosity grew bigger. He instinctively hid behind the tree to take a good look. He took an awfully long moment to stare, until the group disappeared from his peripheral vision. It was then that Kris realized he had been holding his breath.
Something foreign within him bubbled.
He wanted to know the angel’s name.
***
Kris was curious, that much was obvious, but he had never thought he would be sleepless just at the thought of the angel. He was, surprisingly, patient to go back to the same place as the day before, just to measure the time when the beautiful angel would appear again. After days of observation, Kris finally understood that the angel mostly traveled with his group-sometimes a large one consisted of six or seven members, sometimes just a group of three.
It must have been extremely luck for Kris to spot the angel reappearing alone in the Purgatory that day. His instinct told him that he shouldn’t-no, couldn’t waste any time. As soon as the angel walked slowly to his general direction, Kris took the opportunity to grab him. A second later, Kris had him pressed against one of the trees, hidden to anyone. The angel’s eyes were wide opened at the sudden movement. He opened his mouth to scream, but his shrieking was muffled against Kris’ big hand.
“Stop moving.”
The angel did as he was told, but his eyes showed obvious fear at Kris.
“I’m not going to do anything to you,” Kris said quietly. “But if I take my hand away, you have to promise me you won’t scream or I might hurt you. Is that clear?”
Terrified, or angels just happened to be very obedient, the raven-haired male nodded. Kris waited for a few seconds before finally pulling his hand away from the other male’s lips. The angel’s lips were trembling, but he really didn’t say anything.
“What’s your name?”
“S-Suho.”
“Suho...” Kris trailed off, liking the way the angel’s name rolled off of his tongue. “Suho.”
Suho looked frightened, but he didn’t try to fight. The way Kris stared at him was different compared to the other demons. It was...intense. Too intense, in fact. Most demons would give angels hating stares, sometimes hungry stares, but this demon... Strangely, Suho found himself staring back.
The demon was staring into his eyes with such curiosity.
Before the angel managed to even say something else, Kris leaned down to kiss him. Suho shrieked, but again, his voice was muffled against Kris’ lips. Their first kiss was surprising and rough, and Suho pushed Kris away, but it was futile because the demon was much stronger than him.
“Please don’t pull away,” Kris whispered in a half pleading tone. “Please...”
Either it was because of the ‘please’ or any other thing, nonetheless, Suho obliged in resignation. The kisses were starting to turn into deep, passionate ones. They were intoxicatingly slow, and Suho was starting to kiss back. Suho felt his face flushing, and after minutes of kissing, Kris pulled away. The taller of the two licked the angel’s lips as he did, wanting the taste to linger.
“What are you...doing?” Suho asked in confusion, a hand was on his lips. He was still breathless from their kisses and having Kris close to him like this made him breathless even more. Suho didn’t mind to have his personal space be invaded, but never in a million years he would let a demon did it-moreover letting him steal his first kiss!
Suho swallowed. He had made a very terrible mistake. “I-I have to go. My group will be worried...”
“I want to see you again very soon,” Kris said almost desperately.
“I need to go now-“
“I’ll let you go,” Kris interrupted as he grabbed Suho’s tiny wrist. “Only if you promise me you’ll meet me again.”
“I don’t know how-“
“Just promise me. Please.”
Suho hesitated as he looked away. “I-I promise... Now please, let me go.”
Kris finally let go, and Suho hastily ran away. When Kris glanced over his shoulder, the raven-haired angel was nowhere to be found.
***
Kris was starting to wait for Suho everyday.
It was quite hard to do, because his brothers had been giving him unreadable looks every time he excused himself after supper. They knew Kris wasn’t assigned with any task and he was definitely wasn’t old enough to travel on his own.
There were times where Kris caught Suho’s presence, but there was nothing he could do. He could do nothing but to stare at him, because Suho was with his group. Suho didn’t seem to acknowledge his presence, because not even once the angel had ever looked in his general direction.
One day, Kris was allowed to travel with his group. They were gathering in front of Purgatory. Jinki gave his younger siblings information of what they were going to do on earth. Suddenly, at the same moment, Suho appeared with his group.
Kris stopped doing whatever it was that he was doing and his eyes shifted to Suho. Look at me, dammit, he internally growled but Suho, probably wasn’t courageous enough, didn’t look back at him. It must have been obvious that he was staring that one of the angels were staring back rudely at him.
“Why is he staring? Low-life.”
Baekhyun, who had the worst temper between them, heard this. He turned his head so fast to the angel with a finger raised in the air. “What the fuck was that? Say it once again!!”
“Baek,” Kris said warningly, shaking his head and Baekhyun gave him a disbelief stare.
“Wh-what? But he just said-“
“He said nothing. You heard it wrong.”
Baekhyun gritted his teeth in anger and stomped his feet as he spun around. The other demons were staring at them back and forth before fixing their attention back to Jinki. Kris pretended like he didn’t give a damn, but when he had the opportunity, he stole a glance at Suho.
Suho was looking over his shoulder before walking away like nothing happened.
Kris felt himself smiling lightly at the (subtle) attention given.
***
Kris was still waiting patiently everyday for Suho, but his patience was running thin.
Suho was always with his group. Kris didn’t know why the hell the angels always stick together-heck, even demons didn’t do that! At first the blond-haired demon was content with staring at Suho from afar, but as days turned to weeks, clearly it wasn’t enough.
He needed more.
Kris needed to talk to him, he needed to stare into those beautiful black orbs, he needed to have him close. Funny how it almost consumed the life out of him-just because of simple feelings of wanting to interact with Suho like nothing else mattered. Kris was getting desperate, because Suho was all he could think about. He was waiting on his usual spot like any other day, observing the road to the Purgatory when all of a sudden, a soft voice was heard.
“Hey.”
Kris almost had a heart attack upon seeing Suho. His eyes widened in shock, obviously didn’t anticipate this as he instinctively leaned his back against the tree, stuttering dumbly. “S-Suho.”
Suho smiled shyly. “I can’t be long. I only have a few minutes until my brothers realize I’m missing.”
“Right,” Kris nodded. He managed to collect himself back within seconds and casually ran a hand through his blond hair.
“You’re...waiting.”
Kris frowned. “Huh?”
“You’re always waiting,” Suho said softly. He lifted up a hand to touch Kris’ face, but hesitated halfway. “What are you...?”
Kris took the chance to grab Suho’s wrist and the latter gasped sharply. “My name is Kris.”
Suho’s lips quivered. “Kris...”
Kris nodded solemnly. “Are you afraid of me?”
Suho shook his head. “I’m sorry about the other day. Henry sometimes just cannot keep his mouth shut. Calling your kind low-life...it’s really rude...”
Kris shrugged nonchalantly. “Well, we’re demons after all... Besides, we’re from hell. I didn’t expect for the angels to say good things about us.”
“...but you’re different than I thought,” Suho said honestly.
“What did you think about me?”
Suho blushed slightly as he opened his mouth, but then he closed it back. His beautiful face turned pale. “They know I’m missing. I gotta go back.”
“Wait.”
“What...?” Suho looked scared.
“I need more time,” Kris said firmly as he intertwined their fingers together. “Next time. You decide the time.”
“H-how...? I mean, even if I have the time, how are we...?”
Kris gnawed on his lower lip as he thought. “We’ll go down to earth. That way, they won’t be able to track us down.”
“B-but I don’t know when I’ll be assigned to go on my own...”
“We’ll sneak out, that way they won’t notice. There’s gotta be some time when you’re not doing anything for a few hours. Please, Suho. It’s not enough. I need more of you-of us.”
Suho copied Kris’ way of biting his lip. “I-I don’t know if I can make it.”
“Just give me the time and I’ll wait.”
Suho shut his eyes thoughtfully. “Six more days...after supper. Same time, same place.”
Kris nodded in relief, really glad that Suho didn’t reject his offer. “I’ll be waiting then.” He pressed his lips against the back of Suho’s hand before letting go of their fingers.
Suho’s shy smile was definitely the most beautiful thing Kris had ever witnessed.
***
Kris forced himself to wait.
The blond-haired demon couldn’t wait for another six days, but there was nothing he could do. If he wanted to be with Suho, then it was the only way. By sneaking down to earth-just like he had said-no one would be able to track them down. It would be the safest place for them if they wanted to spend some time together.
Waiting had become a habit that Kris himself wondering what the hell had gotten into him.
He didn’t know why he was being like this toward Suho. Ever since their last encounter, his mind had been filled with the images of the raven-haired angel. The way he smiled. The way he had his eyes widened when he got scared. The way he was pressed against the tree-against Kris. The way their hands linked together-oh that’s it, I gotta stop, Kris thought helplessly. I gotta stop thinking about it or I gotta stop because he’s an angel?
After five days that seemed like forever, the day finally came.
Kris leaned his back against the tree. He didn’t move, but he once peeked when he heard chattering. A group of angels were passing by, clearly they were heading to the Purgatory. Kris took another moment to stare, but none of them-none of them, he mentally repeated-was as beautiful as Suho.
“Kris.”
Kris jerked out of his thoughts and any other thing instantly vanished when he laid his eyes on Suho. The angel was standing before him with a shy smile. Their eyes met in the straightest stare, and Suho cleared his throat to speak.
“I don’t have much time, but it should be enough,” Suho informed hesitantly. “Most of my brothers are going down too, but as long as we don’t stumble upon them...it will be all right, I guess. Although I’m not sure how we’re gonna go down-the Purgatory guardians won’t let us through without decent papers-“
Kris playfully rolled his eyes. “There’s always a backdoor. Do you honestly think everyone stays at home when they’re doing nothing?”
Suho blinked in pure shock. “Really? How?”
“But I’m gonna have to kill you if I tell you,” Kris said in a serious manner.
Suho’s white face turned even paler.
Kris grinned teasingly as he ruffled Suho’s raven hair. “I’m kidding.”
“O-oh...”
“Well, not really.”
Suho groaned. “That’s it, I’m going home-“
Kris swiftly grabbed Suho’s hand and dragged him to the opposite way of the Purgatory. The angel yelped quietly as he was (half) forced to follow the devil. “My jokes are lame, I know. But seriously, will I kill someone who has been occupying my thoughts uninvitedly?”
Suho gave Kris a disbelief look, but the latter wasn’t able to see it because he was too busy staring ahead. “You...you’re thinking about me?”
“All the time.”
Kris took Suho to the darker side of the forest and Suho looked around nervously. It was the forest that was said to be forbidden for the angels, because demons inhabited them most of the time. To put it simply, if the angels valued their lives, then they should stay away from the place. Somewhere along the way, Suho realized that Kris was still holding his hand, and his heart skipped a beat at that. The feeling toward Kris was new, he had never experienced it before...
They kept on walking until they finally reached an intersection where two pretty girls clad in dark-colored clothes were standing. Two seconds later, Suho realized that they weren’t just standing, but guarding something. Kris reluctantly let go of Suho’s hand before approaching the girls, but he kept the angel safe behind him.
“Tiffany, Jessica,” Kris said to catch their attention. “I’m going down.”
Jessica, who had the same hair color as Kris, jerked her chin offhandedly toward Suho. Suho flinched slightly behind Kris.“Him too?”
“He’s with me.”
“Rule-breaker, how exciting,” Tiffany squealed darkly. “But are you sure, Kris? He’s so pretty, he won’t last on earth.”
Kris narrowed his eyes. “Enough chit-chat. Just let us through.”
Tiffany glanced at Jessica, and then at Kris, before looking down and jotting something on a piece of paper. Meanwhile, Jessica was staring at Suho a little too much and Kris growled in dislike.
“Stop staring at him, Jessica.”
Jessica snorted. “So possessive. It’s not good to be over-possessive, you know?”
Tiffany handed Kris the piece of paper she had been writing with a wink. “You owe me another blind-date with a demon.”
“The last time I hooked you up with Yuri, you ended up throwing up on her lap,” Kris accepted the paper not-so-graciously and Tiffany uttered something along the lines of ‘But I was allergic to...’ “But let me try to find someone who’s single for you. Thank you, girls.”
Kris wordlessly grasped Suho’s wrist before heading to the door behind Jessica. Jessica opened the scary-looking door, and it revealed a portal. It was similar to the one that was on the Purgatory, but this one was just scarier.
Suho unconsciously tightened his grip on Kris’ hand. Kris only squeezed it lightly in return, as if to say that there was nothing he should be afraid of.
They entered the portal and then everything went dark.
***
They arrived on earth in a blink of an eye.
Suho was never really fond of landing, so he reached out to Kris by instinct. He was glad that the devil caught him easily, because in his group, it would usually be Kai who always remembered to grab Suho. Everything was suddenly too bright for Suho’s liking, and the angel buried his face on Kris’ chest.
“Where are we, Kris...?”
“Seoul,” Kris answered. “One of my favorite places, aside from Beijing and Canada.”
“Wow,” Suho murmured in awe. “Then it means...you’ve been all around the world?”
“Not really. I mean, I-we come to this place a lot.”
“We...?”
“Me and my brother Baekhyun. He was the one who snapped at your brother, by the way.”
“Oh...”
“What do you say we get a cup of coffee?” Kris asked and Suho wrinkled his nose in distaste. “Have you tried it?”
“Me and my brothers came to this coffee-shop the other day. All they served was black coffee and it tasted awful.”
Kris snickered, being a devil he was. Suho puffed his cheeks in protest, and Kris found it horribly, horribly cute. “I assure you, you’ll like this one.”
They talked a lot throughout the trip, but Suho kept on glancing around the city in amazement that Kris had to be really cautious. He didn’t want the angel to slip or anything. After a few minutes, they finally made it to the coffee-shop he and Baekhyun frequented. Kris deliberately ordered for the two of them while Suho took an empty seat in the corner.
A lot of customers turned their heads to stare at Suho, and Kris felt like cracking their skulls opened. But it couldn’t be helped, aside from his beautiful face, Suho’s aura was so calming and peaceful. The male was an angel, after all. Kris loudly cleared his throat as he walked to Suho’s table, as if to announce that ‘This man is unavailable, dammit, stop staring at him.’
Suho scrunched his face in distaste at Kris’ choice of coffee. “Black.”
Kris chuckled. “Try it first, and then you can protest.”
“But I have tried it.”
“This one is different.”
Suho made a face as a sign of protest, but Kris wouldn’t have it. In the end, the angel forced himself to take a sip with a really, really helpless expression-making Kris wanted to kiss him right then-but then he frowned slightly to himself after the first taste.
Kris smirked. “Nice?”
Suho dumbly nodded.
“FYI, if you order black coffee, you should add sugar and cream in it so that they will taste better.”
“Oh.” Suho blinked in confusion as he placed the cup back. “How do you know...?”
Kris casually leaned his back on the seat while crossing his arms on his chest. “I hang out with a human. He teaches me everything.”
“You’re hanging out with...a human?” Suho’s mouth formed a small ‘o’. “And...he’s not affected...?”
“It actually depends on the human whether he can be affected or not,” Kris shrugged. “Maybe higher authority demons can do such thing, but we don’t... Whenever the humans are near us, we just kind of trigger the sleeping evil inside them, but it’s really up to the humans whether they want to use it or not.”
“I see...” Suho slowly said as he tilted his head to a side. “Then you’re not exactly a bad demon...”
“Well...demons are fallen angels, right? So we’re practically brothers.”
At the word ‘brothers’, Suho’s expression faltered, and Kris mentally cursed himself. He didn’t want to be brothers with Suho... No. He wanted more.
The two of them stayed silent after that. Suho took another sip of his coffee, but he didn’t drink much. Kris spent the rest of their time by staring at the angel’s beautiful face, liking the way his heart beat for him. Liking everything Suho did. Even breathing.
Suho fidgeted with his fingers momentarily before saying, “We should probably go back...”
Kris looked down to his coffee. “Yeah. We should.”
The demon must’ve lost his mind when Kris dragged Suho into a dark alley-when they were supposed to go back-and kissed the angel senselessly. Suho’s back was pressed flat against the cold wall, his lithe figure was covered perfectly by Kris. Their lips clasped together in a rhythm, and Suho’s hand instinctively went from the end of Kris’ shirt to Kris’ blond hair. Kris kissed him even deeper as a reaction, tasting him, and he was extremely pleased when he heard soft gasps and suppressed moan escaping the angel’s lips.
“Kris-“ Suho breathed weakly between their kisses. “What are we doing-“
“Kissing.”
“No, I mean...” Suho placed a hand on Kris’ chest, as if begging him to stop. “We’re not-we’re not meant to be...”
“Who says that we’re not meant to be?”
“I-I mean...”
“I’ve never felt like this before, Suho,” Kris firmly voiced out his thoughts, desperately kissing Suho one more time. “And I don’t feel like letting you
go.”
“But-“
“Do you feel the same way for me? Do you feel it too? The way your chest about to burst whenever our lips meet, or just a simple spark whenever our hands touch...”
Suho couldn’t bring himself to answer for a while. The angel tried to look away, but Kris’ gaze on him was stern. Suho closed his eyes before opening them again. Kris never had the intention to let him go from the start, that much Suho knew. He knew it was going to be trouble if he gave in to the devil’s request, but yet he still decided to meet Kris. Not just once, not twice, but a few times already.
The angel bit his lower lip before nodding helplessly.
Kris looked so relieved at his silent answer and he embraced Suho tightly. “Then don’t say it ever again...”
Suho timidly hugged back.
They managed to find the portal they came through and within seconds, they were back at the dark forest.
Kris quickly took Suho to a safer place. Suho gasped mutely when he sensed his brothers were looking for him, and he immediately let Kris’ hand go. However, before they separated, Kris asked for a time for their next meeting. Again, Suho gave him another six days.
“Suho,” Kris called out just as the angel walked away.
“Yes?” Suho stared at him questioningly.
“Be prepared,” Kris said with a serious tone. “Next time, I’m gonna make you mine.”
The colors on Suho’s cheeks were enough for Kris. The angel only nodded bashfully before turning around to quicken his pace, back to Heaven.
***
If Kris had the power to control time, he would’ve fast-forwarded the time to six days from now. But since he was merely a low-level demon, there was nothing he could do about it.
Funny how Kris felt like flipping a table (or five) just to be able to see Suho. His brothers would send him weird looks whenever he growled in frustration, but he paid no attention to them.
Time seemed to fly by painfully slow, but every time Kris’ thoughts flew to the beautiful angel, he would miraculously feel calm and sighed in defeat, willing to wait for another day. It’s worth it. Just a few more days, and you’ll be able to see him. Unable to see Suho was a cruel torture to his soul, but Kris was willing to wait a little bit more. To caress his thumb on Suho’s cheeks. To taste Suho’s soft lips. To feel himself falling deeper and deeper at Suho’s shy smile.
Suho, Suho, Suho.
The angel was the only thing he could think about. It was as if there was no room for anything-anyone-else in his mind, because Suho had taken it all completely.
“Kris?”
Kris lifted up his face upon hearing a familiar voice. He had been sitting all by himself in the corner of the room, far from the other demons. Kris was never too talkative, so he didn’t have a lot of friends. He would only talk whenever it was needed. When the demon realized that it was Baekhyun who called out his name, he nodded with a simple smile.
“Hey.”
“Hey yourself,” Baekhyun replied coolly as he sat on the empty seat across Kris. “Are you okay?”
Kris merely stared as an answer. Baekhyun pouted slightly at the older’s demon expression, but his face showed genuine concern. It was no wonder how Baekhyun could see right through him, because compared to the other demons, he was the closest one to Kris. They had been through a lot together. Baekhyun was always there for him when Kris needed him, and vice versa. In fact, if Kris had someone to share anything with, it was Baekhyun.
“Kris...?”
Kris pondered momentarily, debating with himself whether he should tell Baekhyun or not. There was a slight tinge of guilt as Kris recalled how Baekhyun had told him everything, and it would only be fair if he did the same. But Suho...
No.
Not Suho.
Kris couldn’t tell Baekhyun about the angel.
Not yet.
“Baek,” Kris started all of a sudden and Baekhyun batted his eyelashes at him. “I’m sorry for asking you this, but...has Chanyeol touched you?”
Baekhyun’s expression didn’t change as he continued to stare for another moment. And another. And another. His expression stayed the same until Kris blinked in confusion, wondering if the younger demon actually understood what he meant. Baekhyun, with a slight frown, tilted his head to one side as he pressed a finger to his lips.
“You mean...has he touched me...in bed?”
Kris awkwardly shifted his eyes someplace else. “...yeah.”
Baekhyun gave the taller demon a curious look, but the latter didn’t look back. He glanced around-as if to make sure no one was listening-before leaning forward. Baekhyun looked so serious when he said, “Don’t tell me...you’re planning to hit on a human too?”
Kris snorted into a smile and directed his eyes back to Baekhyun. “Human’s not exactly my type.”
“Well, it’s not mine either, but...” Baekhyun’s eyes glinted with something as he spoke. Kris was pretty sure his own eyes shimmered with the same emotion when it came to Suho. “Chanyeol is...an exception.”
“I know.”
“And I regret nothing.”
“I don’t mean to make you doubt your decision,” Kris said softly. “And Chanyeol’s a great guy for you.” The way Baekhyun smiled at the mention of Chanyeol would make a line of demons fall for him, preferably forgetting the fact that he had the worst temper between them all. Kris smiled back and took the chance to continue. “So...he touched you and...nothing happened?”
Within seconds, Baekhyun’s curious stare was back on his face. “I don’t really understand what you’re implying, but...yeah, nothing happened.”
Kris casually nodded. “Good. What did you feel at that time...?”
Baekhyun gaped. “What did I-what is this?”
“Please, I just need to know.”
“About my sex life?”
Baekhyun’s tone was rising slightly and Kris grimaced when Krystal turned her head to their direction as she passed by. Krystal was famous for her coldness, and fortunately, she didn’t seem to be interested because she walked away like nothing happened. The minute Krystal got out of their sight, Baekhyun huffed with a roll of eyes.
“I feel completed. There. Are you satisfied?”
Kris frowned, but it was more to himself than to Baekhyun. Completed? Haven’t I feel that way for my relationship with Suho?
Baekhyun impatiently snapped his fingers to catch the other demon’s attention. “Kris?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to tell me the meaning behind your questions?”
Kris blinked. “I...am merely curious.”
Baekhyun threw him an annoying gaze before sighing. “Look... I don’t know who you’re hitting on, but I hope you won’t do something stupid.”
“Like what...?”
“Like,” Baekhyun paused just to make really sure no one else was around, “falling in love with an angel.”
It was like someone had hammered his chest because all of a sudden, Kris couldn’t breathe. Had he been panicked, Baekhyun would’ve definitely seen right through him. Thankfully, the blond-haired demon managed to stay calm and casually narrowed his eyes at Baekhyun. “What’s with that?”
“There has been rumor about it,” Baekhyun grimly said. “Something about forbidden love... At first I thought they were talking about me, but Chanyeol’s clearly not an angel. So I tried to dig some information about it, but everyone seems...ashamed of the rumor.” Kris almost snorted. “I don’t know who they’re talking about, but I certainly hope Mother or Father will not hear it...or they will be outraged.”
“Where did you hear the rumor?”
“From the Leviathan girls.”
Kris’ heart almost stopped beating. Jessica. Tiffany.
“But you know the Leviathans, they’re loyal and they can keep secrets until they die. If they’re not, the news of us sneaking down to earth for numerous times would’ve been heard by Father. And it’s not pleasant if he finds out.”
“Huh...”
“But if the rumors are spreading between us...I wonder how’s it going on the other side?”
Kris then pretended to be lost in a deep thought, feigning that he was in no mood to continue the conversation. Baekhyun acknowledged the expression of the older demon’s face and said nothing more after that.
He suddenly felt scared at Baekhyun’s words. If the demons had heard it...then what about the angels?
Kris just hoped that no one would take the rumors seriously.
***
Unfortunately, what Baekhyun said was right.
Before he knew it, the rumor had spread wildly like a fire.
It was a wishful thinking to hope that no one would take it seriously, because it was a sensitive topic between the angels and demons. They were supposed to hate each other, to loath each other. They weren’t designed to care about each other, especially not to love each other.
His six days of waiting was finally over.
Kris was standing on his usual (safe) spot when a group of angels passed by, whispering and talking about the (his) forbidden relationship (with Suho). The angels loudly commented that they were strictly against it, and that they would punish whoever it was if they ever found out. Kris chose to ignore their nasty comments for Suho’s sake, despite the fact that he wanted to punch their faces and break their teeth. Not long after that, a group of demons went to the opposite way of the Purgatory. They were also commenting loudly of how a demon could be so foolish to fall for an angel, while their kinds were better.
Kris could only grit his teeth in irritation.
They would never understand the love he had for Suho.
No one would understand.
Several moments had passed since then, and Kris was beginning to get worried. Suho had never taken this long before. The angel was supposed to arrive earlier-just like usual like the past few weeks-but even until then, he still hadn’t showed up. Kris unconsciously curled his fingers into a fist.
Did something happen to Suho?
Panic began to rise within him, and the demon was about to turn around and look for Suho anywhere else-
-when a soft voice called out his name.
“Kris.”
Kris didn’t think that such a simple thing-just by calling his name-could instantly kill his insecurities. He was so relieved upon seeing Suho that he almost fell onto the ground. Kris immediately pulled Suho into an embrace, causing the angel to gasp softly at the sudden movement.
“Kris...? What’s wrong?”
“I thought you’d never come,” Kris whispered, his tone was laced with slight fear. “I thought you’re just going to ditch me here and never show up.”
“What...? Don’t be silly, I gave you my word, didn’t I?”
Kris slowly pulled away and looked deeply into Suho’s beautiful orbs. The angel’s eyes were sincere and innocent-the kind of emotions that demons mostly didn’t have. Kris wanted to retort, but he couldn’t find a good answer, so he leaned down instead to kiss Suho.
It created something within Kris, something so huge that Kris didn’t know how to describe it.
Their kiss didn’t last long, because they didn’t have enough time. Anyone could easily spot them by then, and Kris just wanted Suho to be safe. He gingerly took Suho’s hand in his.
“Let’s go.”
Suho smiled shyly with a slight nod.
