From my admittedly limited view point, everyone else in the Logrus guild seems to do exceedingly well with duoing. Since I am a friendless loser (tm), I mostly solo. For what it's worth, with a duo it seems much easier to toss together a pick up group to do the group stuff because you've already got the beginnings of a group. And really, for much of the content, if you can't get up a group, you can wait some levels and probably try it with your duo and be able to finish it up. It just might not be level appropriate when you get to it.
We have a kinship on Vilya. Activity goes in cycles, really. My biggest problem, of course, is that I'm on the other side of the country from everyone else so my play times are pretty different so even when there's a lot of activity, I'm not always able to take advantage. Still, the more the merrier!
We're going to be pretty aggressively duoing, but if there's anything you're jamming up on I'd like to make an effort to coordinate with you for those things. Seems more fun for everyone! Also can any of it be re-done or do you get locked out of it after doing it? Another option if Brad-hours are too late for you is to have me run it with Brad and then run it again with you, since I actually sync reasonably well with EST people in my normal cycle. I think Vilya would be best for our purposes because there will be people we know around and that's pleasant; I'm not going to have any illusions about getting good RP on an MMO this time around which means I'm not going to try to do our PVE chars on Landroval.
You're absolutely right; the lack of factions removes certain kinds of griefing, and in fact certain kinds of grief mentalities. That will make it a far more pleasant MMO environment.
LotRO is largely doable with just a duo. There are a few main-storyline quests here and there that yes you'll actually want more than that (if it's a "small fellowship" you can usually do okay with just two, especially if one of you has pets, but "large fellowship means at least 3, usually 4 or more). But usually those aren't too hard to pick up enough extras to do them

If you're looking for options, I recommend Guild Wars. For the longest time, I didn't think I'd like it, then I tried it and I enjoy it a lot better than I every enjoyed WoW. It's really good for casual play. You don't need to put up with asshats in any situation if you don't want to (especially if you turn off local channels in town). After the really easy prologue zones, you can flesh out your party with a NPCs if you don't have enough players, so there's no pressure to constantly find full groups (group size ranges from 2-8). Each class feels (to me) different and unique in ways that WoW didn't, and I think combat is more exciting to watch while you play -- some classes have different animations for almost every ability and the animations all look veeeeeeeeery smooth and clean. The lore is extremely rich and well-developed, especially for a setting made up just for this game. The game itself is gorgeous and doesn't use much in the way of computer resources for how good it looks. I'll put some screenshots below

Ooh that does look gorgeous. I'll put it on the list for "look at after LOTRO." I have a permanent account in LOTRO that I haven't even *touched* though (bought it in a fit of whimsy after the beta) so I kind of want to use it and explore that game.
Drop me a line if you guys do play :) I don't get much game time during the semester because of BUSY but I usually play a little every day during break seasons.
I logged on to a character on an RP server to grab the penguin pet; I was on the server for all of 30 seconds, and in that time I got to see people complaining about RPers in [1. General.] I will never understand why so many people who hate RP create characters on RP servers.
I was in the LOTRO beta, and I really regret that I didn't enjoy the game at all, because it sure was beautiful.
It's gorgeous! I wasn't absolutely enthralled by the game but it's no worse than WoW mechanics-wise, so I think I'll enjoy treating it as a tourism and questline game. The two new classes post-beta seem interesting, too.
And yes, that sort of stuff is totally par for the course on WoW servers. I honestly think people should simply be suspended off RP servers for it. Obviously Blizzard disagrees with me. :) I got on one of the new PVP-RP servers once and was treated to a bunch of slavering jerks in General all boasting about how their sole reason for rolling there was so they could deliberately grief RPers. Um... yay?
I was able to get it to run on my laptop decently for most parts of the game. It started to get laggy when I went to some of the larger cities, and Bree was very difficult to manage on busy times.
By contrast, my laptop could usually handle Stormwind and Orgrimmar pretty well.

Maybe I should discuss that with them, if I decide to try to play... :)

I'll have to see if it'd run on my now out-of-date MacBook...
