Mine is a National and does have a porridge setting on it. Also a "cake" setting that I've been afraid to try! Otherwise it Just Works, and handles brown rice as well as white (brown rice takes longer), and up to three cups of rice. You want to make sure to use the measure included with the rice cooker because rice cooker cups are not American cups. I pre-wash sushi rice in Japanese fashion, but not basmati. I've also cooked garbanzo beans in it on the rice setting ( ... )

They mentioned the weird countdown thing in the reviews, where it doesn't count down until only a very short time before the rice is done (13 minutes.) Mine does that too and you get used to it but it is a little odd ( ... )
