Bradmom has a neat timeshare thing that rather than giving you a timeshare in one location, instead has timeshares in all sorts of places, and they can decide to go wherever they like with proper scheduling and whatnot.  This year they decided it would be nice to spend it in Sonoma county, so we're all in a nifty houselike place near Healdsburg.  ( Read more... )

And for the Salt Course amberley November 20 2007, 07:22:21 UTC
In the NPR Fresh Air interview of Ratatouille director Brad Bird and Remy's voice actor (and foodie) Patton Oswalt, they talked about the research that went into it, which included having to eat at lots of top restaurants. They were both mocking and admiring of Thomas Keller's French Laundry (in Yountville) 28-course tasting menu (in which each of the two couples were given different creations and invited to share, thus *56* different tastes), especially the "3 different kinds of salt" course. (Which did taste differently, they report.)

There used to be a restaurant in Campbell or San Jose that offered Hot Rock dining in which they brought a super-hot rock to your table and you cooked your own meat on it, but it's long-since gone away. That fad seems to have evaporated.

In vaguely rated news, diony pointed out at Powell's that Mark Bittman, author of How to Cook Everything, now has come out with How to Cook Everything Vegetarian.

I've tried to get a reservation to the French Laundry with my mom but it is im-possible.

Pearl Alley has in the past had hot rock Mongolian barbeque at your table. It comes and goes. The salt rock thing is new because it seasons the meat as well as cooks it, for pleasing geekiness.

I still need to get How To Cook Everything. >.> (Not that I'm cooking right now anyhow but I have an absurd passion for good cookbooks.)
