Saturday night, I was up late on the computer. I got an email from my Internet provider that claimed they had trouble with deducting their payment from my checking account and asked for me to verify my information. I followed the link they provided in the email to their web page ( Read more... )

Man, to learn that across the room strangle move by holding up two fingers as if your pinching something inside your victim! That's the greatest move of all time.

I don't think I quite got the hang of bending the universe to my will yet, but I'm learning. Stay tuned for walking on water and other such nifty tricks.

Sounds to me like you've got it well and truly under control. Any word on the island yet?

Wow. Thank you for telling me about this. I thought it pretty much handled. I'm printing this out, and I'm going to go to the bank in the next couple of days -- this week! I'll be sure to do the follow up stuff you suggest!

Thanks a lot for the warning.

What action can I take to help prevent this? Is there anything I can do defensively to counter them assuming my identity?

On the FTC page they have a booklet on what you need to do in different circumstances.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/idtheft.pdf

Continued vigilance is key. While getting your credit report and monitoring it sounds like a chore its one that everyone should do on a quarterly basis, that way if anything out of the ordinary occurs you can immediatly notify the credit bureaus, and avoid future hassels.

I hope that helps, too. Def. read the FTC document, asap and if you have any questions get in contact with them. Also, lodge a complaint with them recounting what happened, and save records of it. That way you have a paper trail in case of future trouble.

Yes. I'm very glad he wrote that. I'm going to the bank in the next couple of days again. Boy! What a mess.

I'm not stubborn all the time. Sometimes I can take advice. ;)
