What action can I take to help prevent this? Is there anything I can do defensively to counter them assuming my identity?

Continued vigilance is key. While getting your credit report and monitoring it sounds like a chore its one that everyone should do on a quarterly basis, that way if anything out of the ordinary occurs you can immediatly notify the credit bureaus, and avoid future hassels.
I hope that helps, too. Def. read the FTC document, asap and if you have any questions get in contact with them. Also, lodge a complaint with them recounting what happened, and save records of it. That way you have a paper trail in case of future trouble.
