I think Thursday will be Offensive Weekly Essay Day. Wednesday is already Occasional Useless Poll Day, so I don't want to muscle in or rain on mtffm's parade. Can't think of a good way to write this sentence so I'll just distill it down to it's essence... kids are growing up with no guilt over having a lack of personal responcibility.

I don't know what's causing it. I think it's much more prevelent in urban areas than rural areas.

There was this theory, I don't know if it's still out there, that when overpopulation of a species in an area occurs, the members of that species start behaving in terribly non-positive ways towards each other. I look at some of the suburban areas I've been in, where you have a dence group of identical houses out away from the city proper, and I start to think it's a really expensive way to make a cage... that's just my two cents, I guess.

No one else has said anything to my "fuck the suburbs" style mini-rant up above, I'm a little suprised. MAYBE THE TRUTH IS ALREADY OUT.

You voice your own opinions and make your stance in your own journal. You rip other's to shreds in the comments as politely as possible. We want to promote discussion of offensive ideas too. ;)

One very close friend went to Columbine High, grew up in Littleton. He's not a shrimp, is reasonably athletic, but definitely not a "jock".

He said the jocks at that school tortured the other guys. Worse than anything he'd ever experienced, and he still has nightmares about it. "There were just parts of the school where it wasn't safe to go, because they would get you...".

He also says all the teachers and administrators knew about it, but did nothing. It was just the way the "Columbine Society" worked.

This is not a complete explanation, but I think that the peer-scapegoating (which really we could call social torture) causes tremendous rage in kids...and when the adults don't care and won't help, it's too easy for them to grab a weapon. Obviously the "well-balanced" find other ways to handle it, but almost all of the teen shooters in schools have not been "well-balanced".

So in one way, the social enviornment tolerated and/or encouraged has something to do with it. NOT EVERYTHING. But one piece.

The same week that Tim Mcveigh bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City as a "message" to the government, Robert McNamara's book came out describing the bombing of North Vietnam as a means of "sending a message" to that country ( ... )

Kids generally won't ask an adult for help. They won't "squeal" on one another. They will allow themselves to be bullied because they don't know where to turn for help. These are the stepping stones that grow the roots of rage, leading to suicide, shootings, or just plain messed up future adults ( ... )
