You have to watch this, especially if you are a fan of stop motion animation, this is literally making the music come to life. Try to watch this in the high def option

Hoedown from Rodeo from Eleanor Stewart on Vimeo.

The music is Rodeo and I'm sure you've heard variations of it countless times, the score was written by Aaron Copland for a ballet of the same name. This ballet features no tutus or pointe shoes and if you caught it on television, you might think you were watching a dance interlude in a musical. This ballet is notable because it is one of a precious few that was choreographed by a woman! Her name was Agnes de Mille and after watching the premier (in which she also danced the lead role), Rodgers and Hammerstein asked her to be the choreographer for a little show they were calling Oklahoma!. It's also a notable ballet in that the female lead gets to be the lovestruck goofball, I cannot state enough how much I enjoy seeing humorous roles danced by women. I saw this ballet performed a few years ago by ABT at City Center and the stage there really doesn't do it justice and there was no orchestra and this music needs to be loud and live. Despite that, Xiomora Reyes danced the shit out of that role. I hope to see it performed on big stage (aka: Lincoln Center) someday.

You can watch the opening portion of Rodeo as performed by ABT in 1973 here and part two here.

On Friday night I saw the New Chamber Ballet.

This is a teeny tiny company of only five dancers. They performed in a studio so it was very up close and personal. It's such a treat to get to see the dancers so close, you could see the redness on their feet and their toes as they had to pass us waiting to get into the studio on their way to the dressing room. The choreographer, Miro Magliore was there and he introduced each piece. The only musicians were a violinist and the world's cutest piano player (the photo does not do her justice). No tutus, all the costumes were simple and rather athletic in nature, you can see an example of them here, that picture was taken the night I attended so you get a good idea of how very up close and personal it was. I thought that this type of performance would be such a treat for a young dancer or any kid who loves ballet, provided he or she was mature enough to sit through it, too bad there were none at the performance I attended. At intermission they served the tiniest cupcakes I've ever seen, they made up for it in taste: DELICIOUS.
