First grade was about the age that my Sarah became a perfectionist. Somebody made a snide remark about her artwork (which kicks so much ass) and after that Sarah didn't want to draw or paint or do any sort of artwork anymore cause she didn't do it "right". Sarah is in 8th grade and is doing artwork again but she still has her perfectionist tendencies.

aw this is distressing to me too, because i feel like if the clan has done nothing else it has always encouraged her artistically, praised her drawing and such. maybe she's just really feeling the transition from summer back into the school year this year too, after having had this awesome summer with maggy. maybe she just hates homework :)

Perhaps she's starting to socialize with more competitive kids at school?

It might be early to talk to the teacher, but it might not.

Is first grade really different from K at her school? I went from an open classroom setting in kindergarten to a really conservative elementary for first grade, and that is where I discovered that I was a terrible artist, would never be able to color within the lines, didn't read the proper way, and basically couldn't do anything right.

Do they do stuff like give neatness grades on artwork and require particular learning methods for reading?
