I don't know much at all about Indian culture, but didn't the Kama Sutra include some same sex acts? It seems to me that that would imply a historical basis distinct from overt Western influence.

Personally, I find that most oldworld-descended cultures are a lot more morally uptight than their ancient counterparts. This definitely applies to all the cultures and peoples descended from the ancient Indus Valley. Plus, I'm familiar with the prejudices of the people I come from. *sigh*
