I would imagine the gravity furnace would do a better job, I don't know why you would replace it with pipes, let alone asbestos-wrapped ones.
But seriously, I've been kinda privileged, a friend has a heating and cooling company out of lansing. When we replaced the furnace with the asbestos, we only took off the asbestos from the pipes that needed replacing, i.e. rusted out or near the interface with the old furnace. Then we just soaked the asbestos, and when it scrapes off it slops to the floor. The danger of asbestos is the fibers that get up in the air.
One word- efficiency. It costs a lot more to heat this place (only 950 square feet) with a gravity furnace... last year I was paying $130 a month- on a budget plan- so I was paying that year round, even in the summer.
It has dropped a little this winter because gas prices are not as high..
