relaxing, oppressive summer

Aug 02, 2007 18:18

When I was younger -- and especially in high school -- I abhorred any sort of physical activity that could possibly make me break a sweat. (The only exceptions were water sports, because I've always loved the water; anyway, one is less likely to get sweaty when one is already wet.) I much preferred to sit on the couch and read, or sit in front of ( Read more... )

Ugh. :( I will remain unrealistically hopeful.

I don't have a bike right now, but I love the quote the former tenant (an avid cyclist) left hanging by the door:
"Everytime I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the human race." -H G Wells

Aww! I have never heard that quote before, but that's great!! :)

I hadn't had a bike for many years, but I decided to start biking again when I moved into a city. It's very useful, and it's been easy to find used bikes that aren't huge financial investments. Is New Haven bike-friendly at all?

There seems to be a sizeable biking community organizing critical mass bike rides, occasional ride-to-work with free breakfasts, Friday night ice cream rides, etc. A lot of grad students bike and I know a couple doctors who bike to work. That being said, I'm not sure the drivers and roads are very bike-friendly. But probably not significantly different from Philadelphia. And you also see a fair number of bikes with their front wheels stolen, and an occasional squirrel-chewed seat on a seldom-ridden bike.

The cutest thing I've seen is a tandem bike with a dad in front, a 6-8yo girl on the smaller bike behind, baby in seat between dad and handlebars.

I hate hot weather across the board. Maybe it's because I like wearing sweaters so much.

I think I might want to start dancing again...we'll have to talk about that. :)

I think I might want to start dancing again, too. ;) I haven't been dancing much this summer, but camp is going to be AWESOME and it will probably rekindle my constant urge to dance.

Wow, I just went to look at the staff list again, and it really is going to be awesome. The English callers are superb, one of the contra callers is Joanna's favorite, and I'm a huge fan of the step dancing teacher. Wow! :-D

Sometimes being exhausted, sun-exposed, and even sweaty can be delightful. It makes you feel like you've been doing something and like you're connected to the world outside and not living in a pod. However, there is definitely something to be said for weather that doesn't make you sweaty unless you're seriously working hard, not just light biking/walking/standing outdoors.

That's pretty much exactly how I'm feeling. :) (But with fewer and more effective words!)
