I'm a sucker for kid fic, so I love thinking about them as daddies. I hate it when people get pressured to have kids when they aren't ready, or if they aren't sure they want them at all. But since our boys are fictional and I will never actually have the opportunity to speak to them, I'm happy to daydream about it ( ... )

I completely agree about where Kurt and Blaine would fall in terms of being fathers; Kurt might enjoy a flight of fancy tea party with a child like his dad did with him, but Blaine's the one who will forget that water is boiling on the stove to build a pillow fort. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them reading to their kids. They'd have voices, possibly costumes and partial staging! :D

I know it's a popular thought, but I personally have some serious issues with the idea of Blaine being an elementary-age teacher. I mean, I think he'd love playing with kids that age, but I think the idea of being a teacher to kids that age wouldn't play to his particular strengths. I don't think he'd like the behavior issues, cleaning up, basic life skills, and so forth that is the grind of elementary education. Oddly enough, though, my headcanon of him giving music lessons on the side is pretty much always with elementary-aged kids. I just don't see him in a school. But that's just me! :)

Mmm fair point on Blaine and the icky-sticky parts of being an elementary school teacher. For me, it's definitely the playfulness that strikes a good-with-little-kids vibe.

My worry with the older kids is that, depending on the environment, I think all of that earnestness would get him eaten alive. Or maybe that's just the school I went to... :-)

But I agree, I also love the idea of music lessons on the side to little kids. Then you get all of the cute with very little of the daily grind of behavior and runny noses.

See, this is why I believe in the fics where Blaine is a pediatric doctor of some sort! All of the playfulness and connection but none of the having to explain to Billy where to keep his hands and testing kids for learning delays and things. I suppose he could be an elementary music teacher, but I just... I think it's too much of the same stuff. Great age-range for him, but not a good job.

I do think his earnestness would be mocked by many teenagers, but that's actually a bit why I think he'd be good in high school, because even though he's kind of dorky he believes in what he believes so much that he'd probably be able to convince most of them to follow along eventually. He'd just have to grow up and not take it so personally first.

Honestly, though I think Blaine has a lot of great teacher qualities, it's hard to imagine him working in an environment where most of the people with him (the kids) would be rejecting and pushing him all day every day.

Like, I think Blaine would have a really hard time with a baby that he couldn’t soothe, because he would get very fundamentally upset if the baby was rejecting everything he was trying, especially if Kurt walked in and took over and the baby stopped crying (as often happens). I think Kurt might go overboard about orderliness and schedules because he can’t control the rest of things and feels all at once the whole scope of responsibility he’s going to have for the rest of this child’s life.

Agreed.

Plus I bet Blaine likes the idea of having a whole bunch of mini-Warblers following him around singing.

...And then I couldn't stop laughing and then things got Von Trapp-y in my head and wow, yes, thank you for that image, I am delighted.

Oh, that is adorable. And I suspect it would end up being a Halloween costume. (If not for Kurt and Blaine's little crowd, then maybe for their kid's scout group.) The image of Blaine and mini-Warblers is adorable.

Ah I really enjoy your take on Kurt and Blaine having kids. And on surprise strengths and weaknesses and Blaine struggling with the way that sometimes kids are un-settlable.

I am with you about the characters kind of existing separate from the writers/me writing them. And if they exist, then I think that the difficulties for two men shouldn't be underestimated. At the rainbow kids events we attend the parents are at least 95% women. I know numerous gay guys and couples and only one has had kids (they share parenting/house/life with the mother who is also gay... two lawyers (one guy/one girl) and a chef... they should be a sitcom). I feel like many gay guys don't talk about the possibilities for having kids unless they are painfully certain that it is what they want.

I will seek out your kid fic.

Thanks!

It's very, very hard for gay men to adopt, certainly compared to heterosexual couples and single straight women but also compared to gay women. I mean, it definitely happens, but it's not like it's shown on TV. Realistically it's tough even to go through the surrogacy route compared with a lesbian couple if they're able to use a sperm donor and have one of the women carry the child.

I have this future!kid fic that I have been playing around with the past 6 months or so. I'm never super serious about it because I don't feel like I write Kurt and Blaine very well. That's not a slight on myself, I've just seen them written very well and I don't always feel like I can find their voices inside my own fic. Also I've kind of abandoned it because Finn was such a huge part of it and I would hate rewriting him out of it:(
But yeah, I like the way cannon keeps telling us that daddies!Klaine is not outside of the realm of possibility. It makes me happy that we can see a vague forming of what their future together would/could be.

Aw, I'm sorry you're feeling down on your fic. There's nothing wrong with writing Finn in fics, I think; we have AUs a-plenty in this fandom, after all. Write it if you feel like writing it, and find a good beta to help you pull it together! :)

It makes me happy that we can see a vague forming of what their future together would/could be.

Me, too! :)
