Writing woes

Apr 15, 2013 22:15

I'm starting a new story that has been in my head for years, seriously, YEARS, but I find myself doing the same old thing where I just want to skip ahead to the good stuff. I'd forgotten how much arduous setup there is necessary to put in at the beginning of a multi-chaptered fic. Le sigh. Oh the horrid trials of authorship, haha.

I, for one, always skip ahead to the good stuff. Eventually I write all the boring stuff in between the fun stuff. It keeps me motivated. :D

I know, right? So much more fun! I used to always do that, but inevitably by the time I got to the enjoyable part that I'd already written, I'd put in some plot line or something that made the piece already written unusable. I used to try to edit them to fit, but it was just so much easier to rewrite it. Le sigh.

If only we could write nothing but juicy parts, haha.

It's been awesome to be able to get back into it, even if it is just a little bit so far.

And I have soooo many half-baked ideas and aborted little tidbits of chapters and stories sitting around on my drive too, lol. (And usually what is written is right in the middle of the would-be fic.) I mean, I can write the inbetweens fine, but I often find them tedious, and if they feel monotonous to write and I can't imagine they're that much fun to read, hence the dilemma. Ah, the joys of dealing with any kind of artistic type thing, haha.

So what kind of partial stories have you got going on?

i have an inuyasha/rurouni kenshin crossover and a rurouni kenshin story. both are started and i know how i want them to eventually end but the first lacks any major bad guy (and the in-between bits) and the second is kind of a canon but i have altered the timing and a bit of background and things play out differently in some significant ways (in my head, but a lot of the events in canon stay the same... i don't want to write out those parts, i was thinking of referring to them. still figuring how to do that).

i don't have a problem reading the background and setup of the stories. it's not boring it's like drawing and coloring background in visual art (which i'm no good at either), it completes the scene. yeah... that didn't help, did it? =p
